Are tubes extinct?

My girlfriend says (quite rightly) that my TV has the best picture she has ever seen. It is a high-definition widescreen tube. She wanted one just like it, so we went shopping. Not only could we not find one like it, we could not find any tube TVs (other than a handful of crappy standard 20"ers.) We also looked at plasmas and LCDs, but the pictures sucked compared to mine (plus they were more expensive!)

Have good tubes gone the way of the dodo? Is there anything we tube lovers can do to bring them back, before it is too late?

While you won't find high quality HDTV tubes anymore, a Panasonic plasma when calibrated is very close. I use a high end pro graphics CRT monitor on my computer and I have in the past compared it to my Panasonic plasma. When my monitor hits the end of it's days(not that far off now - it's like 3 years old now and some screen burn and edge out of focus has begun to take effect) I am replacing it with a 37" or 42" 1080 plasma HDTV, set about 5' back form my sitting position behind my desk.

CRT displays are pretty much a dead issue, which it typical of the way people do things- they usually go for quantity over quality. Unless demand dictates production, it's not gonna happen.

There's always Craig's List. PUt an ad in and specify what you want- I would bet that someone has a new LCD and is trying to find a way to unload their CRT but they don't want to put it out at the curb or take it to the dump.

How big do you want? I have a great Sony Wega 36" that I would be willing to sell to you. Shipping would be expensive though the thing weighs around 200 lbs.

I believe CRT production has ceased or soon will.

The high weight of a CRT's is reason enough to go with an LCD or Plasma.
I understand their not perfect...but.
I have a 36" Toshiba HD CRT upstairs,(200lb) and it took two men and a boy to move it upstairs.
When I move, I'm just going to throw it out the upstairs window.
It's the heaviest thing in the house.

I agree with the above posts - CRT's are on the brink of extinction for sure, save for ebay, craiglist, pawnshops and maybe the occasional yard sale. I think eventually further on down the road they will disappear from those areas as well.
