Apple's Airplay 2 wireless streaming protocol is finally here a year after it was first announced at their Worldwide Developer Conference.

A year after it was first announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference in June of 2017, the AirPlay 2 wireless streaming protocol is finally here. AirPlay 2 brings multi-room audio to Apple’s HomePod smart speaker, and promises a huge new ecosystem of compatible devices from a wide range of manufacturers.

Nice. Control4 supports AirPlay 1.0 with their ShairBridge driver. Looking forward to 2.0 support as well.

Using voice commands and control of smart speakers/tv's possibly (using AppleTV) reminds me of this:

Now, imagine multi-channel; and, home theatre down the road could be possible from just an iPhone and a bunch of battery powered active speakers.

The problem with Apple Airplay 2 is that it streams music to devices only from within the Apple ecosystem, like iTunes and Apple Music. If you want to stream Sirius Radio, Pandora or Spotify you're out of luck! /Peter F.

Airplay is all about getting iTunes from computer to stereo receiver. So yeah, if you have some other music player on your computer, you would need another means of wired or wireless delivery, like Bluetooth.
