thanks for the responses. I already own a velodyne 1210 sub, which has a
10" active and a 12" passive down firing. So should I consider getting speakers that don't have built in subs? like the def tech bp10's. It seems like some think it would sound better with a separate sub.
I would get the BP10Bs for several reasons.
1) The BP10Bs have two 6.5" Midrange/upper bass drivers and two 1" Tweeters. The BP7006s have two 4.5" Midrange/upper bass drivers and two 1" Tweeters.
2) The BP10Bs are less expensive. You could get them brand new at street prices for $750-$800 per pair.
3) You already have a Subwoofer.
4) Julian Hirsch/Stereo Review measured the BP10B's FR as 20Hz-20kHz +/-6dB. That is outstanding at any price.
Interesting points:
If you called or e-mail Def Tech directly and ask them for the +/-3dB F.R. of the BP10Bs, they will tell you that it is 30Hz-20kHz +/-3dB.
However, Julian Hirsch Lab/Stereo Review measured the BP10Bs to be 25Hz-20kHz +/-3dB.
Why the difference?
It is because of the different measuring techniques, room, lab, and people, among other factors.
Def Tech says the CLR3000 has a F.R. of 28Hz-20kHz +/-3dB @90dB w/m.
Tom Nousaine’s Lab agreed 100%. He also said the CLR3000 has a F.R. of 28Hz-20kHz +/-3dB and the low bass limit @ <10% THD is 25Hz @ 74dB.
Some people seem to despise Def Tech because they, like MB Quart and some other loudspeaker companies, chose to state the “OVERALL” frequency response, instead of the +/-3dB F.R. For example, the StudioMonitor 450 has a stated overall F.R. of 24Hz-30kHz. However, at 24Hz it is at –30dB! So yes, their speakers may be able to go down to the stated F.R., but not at +/-3dB. Some people consider this a LIE. But are they lying? They are simply stating the OVERALL F.R.
So if I were to extrapolate the BP7006s F.R. into Julian Hirsch Lab, I would say it has a F.R. of 24Hz-20kHz +/-3dB and at least 20Hz-20kHz +/-6dB. The built-in subwoofer is great. You can’t go wrong with either the BP7006 or BP10B.
Bottom line, you have to like what you hear.
Personally, I would get the BP10Bs for my Front Left, Center, and Right, especially since I can get them at my local dealer for $350 each x 3 = $1,050.
Don’t listen to Sheep. You can’t blame him for hating Def Tech’s OVERALL F.R. I wish Def Tech would state all their F.R. as +/-3dB @ 90dB w/m too. But still, it’s their LAB and every Lab will differ with different techniques, etc.
