apartment-friendly sub?

Well now that I'm somewhat set on getting a pair of x-ls encores, I'm wondering what sub I can get that would work in an apartment, at mid to low volumes. I was initially just thinking the X-sub since it would (maybe?) blend well with the x-series speakers. I heard it's a nice little sub that is good at average volumes. I don't want something too big, though I don't want it to sound like junk. I'd mostly be using it for HT or games, budget around 200 or so.

I'm not sure, I'm probably moving soon... I'm not actually going to buy anything until I move though, I was just planning ahead.

Has anyone ever used SubDude, does it do anything?

I heard the x-sub has port chuffing issues, but is any sub that size/cost going to have the same issues?

I've never used SubDude, but I've seen others here with similar products.

I suppose my input on your sub would be that your budget and any size restraints would be the key parameters. A sub being apartment-friendly is, IMO, more a function of you being apartment-friendly. :) You can crank up a small sub, or play a large sub at low volumes. Good bass is good bass, even at lower levels.

I've seen a number of subs being recommended in the $200 range, including ones from Dayton and AV123. A search in the forums would find them, but I'm sure that others will chime in with links! People here are really great about that.

So I guess there's no difference between getting a slightly smaller sub and turning it up a bit more or getting a slightly larger sub and turning it down?

If anyone knows any links to comparisons between budget subs that'd be really helpful. I know craigsub did a big comparison, but those are money subs, way over my budget/needs.

Not necessarily. What I was getting at is that a quality sub should still be considered for an apartment or small room, not just for a house or large room. A shouldn't have used the terms "small" and "large". Sometimes a mentally equate "large" with "more capable" in the sub world, but that's not always the case.

There is a difference, because a small/cheap sub won't have the extension ability that a larger lower-tuned (or sealed) sub will have.

About the port-chuffing problem, I think if you were playing the X-Sub loudly enough to have that issue you are probably bothering the neighbors. Unless you have thick walls or an acoustically insulated apartment. Some of the recently shipped X-Subs had problems with noise from air leaking at the plate amp, but that is being corrected on all current units that haven't shipped yet.

The x-sub is on sale at $159 dollars until tuesday july 15th. That is an excellent price for an already excellent priced budget sub. MLS went through his entire x-sub inventory not too long ago and trouble shooted all the problems that have been reported which have been found and fixed. The low output problems that have been reported are caused from mis-stuffed resistors on the pre-amp board and the staff now know where the air leaks are coming from and have been corrected.

Not sure but this was called a "summer sale". The ETA on the x-subs are TBD which means they do not have any in stock. If you ordered an x-sub today, you probably would not get it any time soon. When I ordered mine it took a few months and when I ordered mine there was an exact ETA but that got delayed. BTW your credit card will not get charged until it gets shipped. Except with certain sales and that is disclosed up front.

Adam brings up a good point here. Bass will travel through walls like a hurricane.

I would jump on that x-Sub at $159.00

An apartment friendly sub is a sub that's off. I never use mine much past 8 PM.
We get our movie watching started around 6 PM. :)

I just ordered another x-sub today and will be going with dual (2) x-subs now. I payed an extra $10 dollars for the Cherry satin finish. Satin black is $159 the cherry satin is $169. I could not pass up this sale. An extra $10 dollars for a real wood veener finish, I could not pass up as well. Shipping UPS to canada will be $59 bucks. The shipping date for these subs is TBD (to be determined) so who knows when it will ship. I am thinking probably in a few months, but hopefully sooner.

Actually, for this sale your credit card WILL be charged immediately because you are getting a gift card equal to 10% of your purchase under this sale, which lowers the effective price of the x-sub to around $143 for satin black. But I definitely agree with your advice on this sub, I jumped on this sale and ordered one myself. :)

Can you explain this a bit more about the gift card. I know nothing of this. When I ordered online, the purchase order says nothing of this gift card. The Satin Cherry I ordered was $169, shipping $59, Total $228. Thanks for the info!

Edit: I just found the sticky of the sale on their message board explaining this. Fantastic!

The gift card of 10% of the purchase price of the goods you ordered (excluding shipping) can be used after July 25th for future goods. Say your order came to $200 with this current sale then you would get $20 of credit on your next purchase.
