Anything better than a used Panasonic SA-XR57...

...for a 2.1 setup using a pair of PSB Alpha B1's and a DIY sub, when sound quality is the ONLY concern? I don't need hdmi, video switching, etc. I do need a remote control and the ability to listen at loud levels. My budget is $200-$300. I'm using a Denon 2803 now in "direct" mode with tone function turned off and the sound is too dark/compressed/dull:(
My room's floor has a thin area rug over ceramic tile Walls are drywall. Furniture is mix of mostly cloth with a little leather. Room is approx. 13x18x9 with several openings. Speaker wire is 14 ft runs of lamp-cord style 16 ga 99.9% OFC. I think the brand is AR. Source is Dish Network vip211hd 90% of the time. Older Oppo dvd the other 10%.

The receiver isn't making it sound "dark/compressed/dull", that's far from the realm of possibility.

Those are pretty dainty speakers. I can't imagine they are very dynamically capable given their size and orientation. Those speakers just will not be able to deliver the crushing output it sounds like you want either.

If you describe the sound you are hearing to dark, compressed, and dull, I'd recommend checking out Klipsch. Many of their models are quite dynamic, they aren't dark, and they definitely aren't dull. I personally like the way the SF-2 floor standers sound for their lower end models and they can go for pretty reasonable prices in the used market. They are also pretty easy to drive and will go significantly louder than the PSb Alpha B1 speakers given the same wattage input.

I picked up on that you where considering room treatment as a possible solution to your sound quandry. Acoustic treatment would have a profound affect on your sound accuracy. Reading your description of how it sounds makes me pretty sure it's not the culprit of what you aren't liking here, unless your speakers are just plain set up wrong. I think you can skip this step for now.

A cool factoid about the SA-XR57: it's tested power is exceedingly high for a 10 pound receiver. It uses a derivitive of Class D power, a switching amplifier, and works very well with complex loads given it's size. The Denon AVR-2803 seems to do the opposite of what I'm used to seeing a Denon do into 4 ohm loads, and that's lose power. It's ACD performance is also pretty poor, but all channels driven has been found to be less important in virtually any scenario as it's rarely called for. I do think the AVR-2803 is fine for now, but if you can pick up a SA-XR57 for a song it's worth a shot.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I must stick with a small bookshelf speaker. I am using a subwoofer for the bass. Can you recommend a Klipsch similar in size to the PSB that has good reviews? Thanks!

Have you heard these personally or heard good things about them by someone whose opinion you trust?

I don't understand why my Denon/PSB combo sounds so dull to my ears AT ALL volume levels
The B1's are so highly rated! The Denon is no slouch either.

I also think I may be spoiled by the sound of my Sansa Clip/JVC Air Cushion earphones, which I listen to almost daily. They have an airy top end, great dynamics and very deep bass. If I could get that in a bookshelf/subwoofer combo in my living room, I'd be very happy!

Does anyone make a good quality bookshelf speaker that has the airy highs and wide dynamics of my Air Cushions, minus the deep bass, that are capable of playing rock, hip-hop and movie soundtracks at "reference level", while still sounding "accurate" (i.e., it doesn't add or subtract too much from the input signal) for under $400/pr?
Klipsch RB-51?

Higher sensitivity speakers would be better to fill the room. You should go and audition the Klipsch and others. Another issue could be your room itself;)

My room is relatively "live". I don't think it is the problem.
I have nothing against Klipsch, but is it the only brand that fits my listed criteria? Thanks.

Sorry. I did read up on the HSU, but I think Klipsch is easier to drive and more efficient. Also, the 2 bookshelf shootouts here are positive on the RB-15 (updated to 51?) but negative on the HB-1 :(

Have you tried taking it out of pure direct mode and seeing if that changes anything.
IMO since you don't have the perfect situation (few of us do) it won't cost you anything to mess with the tone controls a bit, just to see.

Are they on stands? Since they're rear ported they won't really work on a bookshelf. Just a thought.
You probably already know that.
just my 2 cents

I really hate to use tone controls. I figured I'd give the Klipsch a shot. Unfortunately no one near me sells the klipsch reference line, so I went ahead and ordered the RB51's online. Now I need to sell these Alpha B1's. Anyone want them for $150? They're less than a year old, MINT in the original box.
