I would definitely hit up eBay if you want something seamless. I do this all the time for the MX850 remote control from URC which integrates really well into Crestron control systems. I sometimes get them with 'bad buttons', but I fix them and they work really well.

But, picking up something like this for under $200 may well be worth the cost, especially if a programmer is involved in setting things up. Just have them program it, let them know you want it as a hot spare, and it'll be all set for you to go whenever you need it... Or at least, that's how things would work in my world.

Awesome thanks for your help!

Seriously, I have no life.
I also have one installed in the wall and that's what's been getting me by for now. @highfigh The remote is not completely dead just the touch screen and buttons freeze every time I try to use it.

The installer is coming this Wednesday with the new one and should be able to move all the programming over I hope if not just program the new one.

This harmone remote will be just a temporary emergency backup for any future issues because it takes time to get on they're schedule if they're backed up so as you point out @BMXTRIX just a very good bargain on ebay should be the way to go
I have seen remotes freeze for some unknown reason and they needed to be returned to default, but that can't work without being reprogrammed and some software isn't available to consumers. I would like to know if your problem can be solved by a reset. I can't think of any that had this as a recurring problem, but worst case- you might end up with a spare remote.

The program in some of the older RTi remotes can't be retrieved by using the software- I ran into that last year when A) the programmer omitted several obvious commands on the screen and B) didn't make sure to make the program available to the homeowner after leaving the AV business. This caused the remote to be abandoned because a completely new program was needed, just because they changed some equipment in the system. RTi couldn't help, either- one guy in tech support actually apologized for that aspect of the software.

The guys that installed said by my description they think it's either a crack in the motherboard or a glitch in the programming that's not fixable but they come out tommorow so we will know for sure.

I'll let you guys know what they say and hoe everything goes. If the remote does get fixed I may just get the new one from them and keep the old one as a spare

Are you using a Serial-USB adapter for the MX-850, or do you have a computer with a serial port? I had terrible problems with my adapter and had all but forgotten about the few 850 remotes that I had installed, until one of my customers called to have me move the system to a different house, with some new equipment that required some program changes. I walked in and saw the MX-850 and shuddered because reprogramming could go well, or not so well- it constantly put up the message about the COM port being wrong......GRRRRRRR! Fortunately for me, another customer gave me some items from the HTC cell phone displays his company had designed and included were some computers that controlled everything in the displays. I had been checking one of those out and saw that they had been controlling the displays via serial commands- what took literally hours with my laptop and that adapter (and URC couldn't help) now takes minutes. That MX-850 is still working and I initially programmed it in 2008- it's in the third house I have done for them.

My laptop (Dell Latitude) has a connection on the bottom for a port replicator/dock. So, I have a dock I can attach which natively appears to the laptop as a built-in serial port. I'm sweating a bit on when I buy a new laptop because I've used the same docking station for a couple of models now and it's been amazing. Completely flawless.
I did ask on some Crestron user forums about USB to RS232 adapters in use and received some good recommendations, including some Win11 options. So, I just ordered one. My 9-5 job laptop does not have a serial port and is running Win11, so I need an adapter for it for the VERY rare time I need to use it. Crestron gear is pretty much all USB or IP controlled these days.

I probably have a couple dozen MX850 remotes out at client's homes. They are a 1:1 drop in for the Crestron ML600 remote control. I don't program them in URC software, but in Crestron software and can load directly from Crestron software. It's a solid solution for me for that product. I've also integrated other URC 418Mhz products directly into Crestron.

Do you want one of the computers that have a serial port? They came from a company called dfi Tech- they were made in 2015, but the tech support guy said they're just made to work without failure in digital signage and other industries that need reliability. I have one with Display Ports, rather than HDMI/DVI, too.

I know serial isn't as common for remote programming, but when I needed it, I was incredibly happy that I had one that allowed me to avoid using that disaster of an adapter. It's a GoldX and was highly recommended, but as I think about who recommended it, they weren't programmers or installers, so, shame on me for believing what they said.
