Generally I have to agree with you. But Ive owned a pair of Thiel CS.5's which really lack lowend base needed for a HT theater. However they were some of the best speakers Ive personally owned.
Speakers like the Alaxandria by Wilson (
http://www.wilsonaudio.com/product/alexandria/ ), are simply not home theater gear... They are overkills, and are also at that price range do not fit near home theater gear, need to be placed away from walls, and need to be specifically AIMED at the listener. If you look at the top sections of the speakers, they are all on individual axis, that allow for the speakers to point to the listener. Making them absolutely perfect for music and sound.
If you look closer, you will find the specs
Height: 72 inches
Width: 17.5 inches
Depth: 26.75 inches
System Product Weight: (each) 750 lbs (system) 1500 lbs
at 72 inches thats 7 feet tall, though they are only slightly over a foor wide and 2 feet deep. The real issue is the weight. You cant put these in your average home. You need additional support structures on the floor to protect these speakers from either warping the floor, or going right through it.
Sure you can use these for movies, they dont even need surrounds... but the question would come up with is, what WOULD you use for surrounds on these speakers...
I can think of only one thing... another pair
However then you need a center, and I have no understanding how to do that one... Anyway you cut it, I dont beleive people buy these speakers for HT perposes... then again their are some really rich really good setups around.
