Any problems playing 2010 Blu-Rays?

Hello all,
Anybody having problems playing newer 2010 Blu-rays on their OPPO BDP-83?
Just as I hit play and put the first fist full of popcorn in my mouth the player says 'Loading' then just sits there.
I have the latest firmware installed
The two most recent problems were Date Night w/ Tina Fey and Killers w/ Katherine Heigl.
Disks are clean and no scratches and all Netflix rentals. I sent Date Night back and the replacement did the same thing.:(

Over the last several months I have had two releases give the "loading" for a very long time. Both times the second time worked and I was able to watch the movie. I think one of them was Date Night but I didn't keep track of the other one. I have not updated my firmware in a while so I have no idea what version I am running.

I had 2 Netflix Date Night discs that would not play. Never did watch it.
No issues with Killers.

I've heard that many people were having issues with Date Night, but I rip all my blu rays to my media pc's so I never have issues watching any of them... as long as I keep my ripping software updated I can rip anything.

Oppo will most likley tell you to go in and clear your stored memory and try the movie again. You can also shoot them an email about that movie and see what they say, but it sounds like it may be a problem disc.

I had one movie take 3 minutes to finally play, not sure now which one. I thought I had a serious system issue:eek:

I can only remember one bad disc (and it really sucked) in recent years, and that was Inglourious Basterds. jliedeka had the same issue; we both got replacement discs which worked fine. What sucked for me is that I had a completely full house for the viewing. What a PITA.

So I asked around and some hardcore BD nut was telling me that Universal just really sucked historically with BD QC. They included Doomsday, Serenity, Death Race, Wanted, Chronicles of Riddick, and perhaps others.

I quickly looked up Date Night and Killers, and it doesn't appear to me that either are Universal. I think the worst HDDVD malfunction experience I've ever had was with Bourne Ultimatum, and I guess I shouldn't be surprised that it's a Universal title as well.

It isn't Universal IMO, it was the company that they used to make their discs and it isn't specific to Universal, though for some reason they have had quite a few instances both with audio and video discs.

I've had only one disc that wouldn't play so far and a few that had glitches.

Ah. Do you have any links/info to share about who makes discs for who? Thanks. I'm extremely curious as to who made my IB BD.

Did that ever work for you?

No, but it has apparently been going on for years, because it first surfaced with some of their SACDs and I had a few of them. Fortunately, Best Buy was on board and replaced the discs free of charge at the time.

Yes, in one instance it did solve the problem, but if it is a decoder issue, that may not be the answer.

Even my very old P2550 plays Date Night without any issue. I know it sounds unlikely but may be you did have 2 bad discs.

I tried the movie 'Killers' again. What had initially thrown me off, this is the slowest loading disk I've had so far.
That, and no 'Loading' symbol. After about 2 - 3 minutes it played.
We've re-rented Date Night, so I'll see how that goes.

I should mention that it took so long to load (both from disc insertion and from the end of the commercials) Date Night, one could have easily assumed it would not play and given up prematurely. On the other hand that was my vintage P2550 and I would assume the OPPO 83 should do much better.

Hey Rick, I hate to brag but I just tried Date Night on my PS3, here's the results:

From disc insertion - 31 sec to see something, 50 sec to the Fox screen and 68 sec to see the train.

From after the commercials - only a few seconds for the movie to start.

May be with the recent software updates the PS3 is now faster than the Oppo for some movies.

Hi Peng, I'll let you know about Date Night; it's back in our Netflix queue.
OPPO support told me to shut off the BD live feature. I noticed that on Killers my town's name and outside temp showed up on the screen. Downloading that info explains some of the wait time.
If you have Killers let me know how long that takes to load.
Thanks.

Just so happens we saw that on Friday. Didn't time it but it took some time even after the latest firmware but not 3 minutes as another one took.

The one movie that wouldn't play on my Oppo was The Box. It wouldn't play on my PS3 either. The movie would actually start and after about 15 min, it would freeze. Froze at a different point on the PS3, but it still froze. I sent it back to netflix and did not get it again. I am pretty sure it was a disc problem since it didn't play on either player.

I am sure it was the disc. With frequent updates, at times monthly, if PS3 cannot play it then it must be the disc.:D
