Any experience with this DVD player?

I'm seriously considering upgrading my AGING JVC DVD player to a DVD/SACD/DVD-AUDIO PLAYER. The problem is that I have spend quite a bit on my other gear (reciever, speakers, sub) that my wife will kill me if I spend too much on a new DVD player. I was thinking about something like the Pioneer PIODV578A ($127.95). Seems like a good player to me. Anyone have any experience with this player or can recommend another good DVD player at or around the same cost?

Thanks!!

I've had my 578a for a week now and have not had any problems at all with it. I have read about others that did however but I think it was the firmware,(heard alot about players with manufacture dates of july 2004) date of manufacture on mine says nov 2004 so maybe thats why.
My only complaint is (and maybe I shouldn't complain) that i have to access the setup menu to change the audio prefrences ie: DVD-A playback or DTS or DD it defaults to DVD-A so when I want to hear a DTS or DD disc I have to change the setting.

Other than that I am pleased with it. hope this helps.
BTW got mine for 114.00 so look around a bit

Thanks for the info. I'll have to do a little shopping around to get the lower price, but I think this will be the new DVD player for me.

Thanks again!

Step up to consider

If you can swing a little more, around $250, you might want to consider the Yamaha DVD-C6770 (C750 is same model). Looking at the reviews, it would be a meaningful step up in both audio and video performance, which would be noticeable if you have a good amp and speakers. We have one and are quite pleased with it.

I'll have to look into this model as well. I would assume that the Yamaha has the fixed X-over at 120Hz? If that is true, I don't think it would be the best choice. From what I understand, the Pioneer has a similar fixed X-over. I have also now been looking at the Samsung DVDHD941. Can't find any information on the X-over however.

The 578 is quite a good player for the price. I returned the Sony 775 in favor of the Pioneer 578 - I think the sound from the 578 is much better. However, if you are running a HTIB system where the level of detail might not make a major diffierence, the Sony 775 might be a good player for you. However, if you have better quality components, the system will benefit from the 578.

I'm not running an HTiB so I would definitly want the better DVD player. I am leaning more towards the Samsung becuase I just got a new TV with an HDMI input and the Samsung has an HDMI output. I'm sure I'd appreciate the better picture quality that this would offer.
