The revamped loudspeaker features AGA’s patented CDTII tweeter – an improved version of the original CDT - and S2 Technology, for low-frequency extension. The new Reference 3.1 also replaced the non-polar electrolytic capacitors with a metalized polyproplene type in the crossover, resulting in better mid-range clarity and enhanced low-level resolution. MSRP of the speaker is $2,995.00 a pair.

They don't really look any different from the previous version though. At that price point, I would think they would have at least changed them somewhat aesthetically.

Speaker updates

I am amazed that a speaker in this price range has to be "upgraded" to included metalized polyproplene capacitors and Neodymium magnets. These types of components can be found in some speakers that I would consider budget models. It goes to show that you are paying for asthetics and not build quality.

This speaker is being considered one of the best deals in hi-end audio. Also, its retail has remained the same even after mods. After you get more involved with this field you will realize almost ALL companies seek to improve and upgrade, even at price marks of thousands more. If you read some (if not all) of the pro reviews and Gallo's website, I feel you'll appreciate that the innovation and technology implemented is high deserving, while the end result far exceeds many speakers many dollars more.
We shouldn't speak on things we have'nt fully investigated. It cheapens the art and science of hi-end audio.

That's the most educated knock I've heard around here in a long time! :-D

I do tend to aree with Harmaphon though. So much so that I auditioned the Ref. 3's a few weeks ago and put an order in for the 3.1s with matching surrounds, center, and a second amplifier to drive the second voice coil in the main speaker(Hooray for bi-amping!). As soon as they arrive, I'll be sure to put up a review of them. I guess that means I finnally get to breakout the new SPL meter I got.

God knows when they're going to show up though. The first generation had a 7 month waiting period when they were first released, so whether it be looks or sound that drove demand, people certainly loved them.

Please note: This speaker is essentially an omnipolar system. What does this mean? For optimal results, do not place closer than 4' to a rear wall, no closer than 2.5' from a side wall, and have symmetrical room positioning[same distance from both sides and back walls in relation to speakers and centered listening position]. Put it closer to a wall, and the result will be very degrading because of the time differnce of direct vs. reflected and the relative SPL in relation to such of high frequencies being reflected off of the surfaces[due to the 300 degree radiation tweeter used on the Reference 3.1]. If you use any treatments at the 1st reflection points, use only very mild diffusion at the most, at side and rear reflection points with such a speaker as an omnipolar, or you will remove the key sound effect feature inherant to an omnipolar system.

This speaker has the best apparent construction quality I've ever seen in it's price range. I find it hard to find negative things in relation to it's construction and price. Choosing to improve certain aspects of it at the result of greater cost to the manufacturer at this point is a rather interesting issue. The speaker system has great potential, based on it's design principles[though I have no idea how well final execution is, because I have never seen credible 3rd party measurements of sufficient detail, and I have never heard a properly set up pair].
