djoxygen,

The DMC-1 can be had new right now for $1699 via this link:

Now you may face the same issue I am: AVM30 or DMC-1?

Also, having owned the 990, it is not as ugly as most proclaim it to be. It is a great pre/pro for the price, but the bass just never was completely dialed in and the AVP7 bested it with movies which is what I listen to most.I would agree however, the DMC-1 and AVM30 definately are sexier looking pieces.

Peace,
I almost pulled the trigger on an Anthem AVM40 until I found the Denon
AVR-4306. More features, same SQ, for a street price of $1500 - I
don't believer there is a more feature rich pre/pro or receiver at any
price...

Tony,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I used to have the Denon 5800 flagship receiver, and I always found it a little laid back, like I was not drawn into the mix like some other units I have owned.

I took a look at the piece on Denon's site and it looks like a great receiver, but I think I would be wondering about the other units I'm looking into if I bought another receiver. The only receiver I have used on par with separates is the Boston Acoustics 7120. It sounds identical to the AVP7, although I understand the upper ranger Denons are supposed to be pretty good.

As far as features in a unit, I have my room treated so I don't care about EQ and I don't care about HDMI right now as I only use one source for watching movies most of the time and it can be connected directly to the projector. I also don't trust auto setups from my experience so far (Outlaw, Boston Acoustics, Yamaha).

I have really looked around at things and learned what I do want after owning so many other pieces of gear. Unless, there is something I have really missed I am pretty much down to the Emotiva and the Anthem. I will make my decision in the next couple weeks.

Did you use the 5800 as a pre/pro or did you use it as a receiver?

Why would you expect the processing on the Anthem to be better than the Denon?

Tony,

I used the 5800 as a receiver. The 5800 just sounded dull to me. When I got the Yammy 2500, everything just seemed to open up.

I took another (closer) look at the 4306 and it does have the features. However, sound is most important to me. I may have to go and give one a listen though.

I am going off my past experiences with Denon and have heard the Anthem (although not in my own room) and think the Anthem sounded better. Unfortunately, my Anthem dealer does not have I unit I could try at home or I could put it and the 4306 head-to-head in my own environment.

I'm starting to back off a bit on buying right now. I would like to see what Yamaha does this fall, as I feel Denon and Pioneer are spanking them right now with their mid-level recievers. To get everything I want in the Anthem I would really need to buy the AVM50 and that is just out of my price range all together. I think I will just see what happens between now and the end of the year. Besides, my budget will only increase and technology will get cheaper between now and then.
