Waiting for the a big brown truck!

I really wanted an Anthem, but to keep my speaker budget high I opted for a Yamaha RX A830. Plus, I got no interest, no payments for 12 months through Newegg.

Now, where's that damn truck?!
Congrats man :) I hope you get to have lots of fun with your new Yammy. My unit is still going strong and its now 5 years old. It will be interesting to se what the new YPAO results will be.

You probably don't even need any ext amps. I bet the Yammy will do fine by itself. Save some money. :)

You may be right. Peng said the same thing. One other reason why I bought the A830 is for the 6 Ohm switch. According to manual, it will also drive 4 Ohm speakers.

Oh man. Has the truck showed up yet?

Looking very sharp :)
Thanks 3db! If I can keep the cat off of it I may get to use it. :D

In the box, I noticed a square object in wraps just left of the wrap. Is that an ipod dock?

That's because PENG and I both know that tweeters and midrange usually only use about 1 - 2 watts. ;)

It's the subs that need all the power.

Heck, even when I use my Phil3 full range in PD 2.0 mode, my Denon 3312 alone does a great job. So I didn't even use an ext amp here.

Not yet. I'm still taking in all the advice I have been given.

I want to sincerely thank everyone that helped me with this decision!

I chose the A830 over the Anthem for a few reasons. The first is price. The Yamaha was more than a thousand $$ cheaper and had most of the features wanted.

Still tweaking and getting familiar with the set up.

Some teaser pictures.

I would take the 830 even if it costs more than the MRX, and no I am not kidding.. The only thing is it pisses me off that it has 8 HDMI inputs, 1 more than my AV8801. I only need 7 but don't prefer to use the one in the front. To me the front one is only good for occasional/temporary use.

I thought the same when I opened the box, then realized it's the am antenna... :(

Hm, this surprises me. It makes me even happier about my purchase though.:D

As far as HDMI, I only have BD, cable box, and a Mac Mini so that wasn't a huge issue. What mattered more to me was the second HDMI out. That's good for me, but bad for you guys because I may make you all crazy with my questions when I need help getting it set up.

Set up, settings and stuff

Here are the room correction settings after running Audyssey with the Onkyo 608.

Front L/R/C set to 40hz, Surrounds set to 50hz.
Distance; L/R at 15'.0. Center was set to 14.'0. And surrounds were set to 6'.0
Before running Audyssey, I turned the sub level down to about the 10pm position. The sub was set at 26'.0

I ran YPAO and the settings are different.

It set all speakers to large. Distance; L/R 13ft, Center; 13,5ft. Surrounds Left 6.8 ft. Right 5.8ft. Sub, 13.5 ft
Levels; Front L/R 0.0dB, Center +2.0dB, Surrounds L 0.5dB, R 0.0 dB. Sub +2.5dB
Sub xover was 60hz.

I set the surrounds to small and xover at 40hz but left everything else the same. i also chnaged the sub distance to 26ft. I probably should have left things as YPAO set them, but I know more than some room correction software...

Some other things to note; The remote is awesome! Nice feel and it's a learning remote. Detachable power cord. I know that's of interest to some, to me it's just an excuse to spend more money and get this....Cardas - Clear - Power Cord-Audio Advisor...I'm kidding. But I have been looking at other power cords. :D

I'm trying to think of anything else I should mention..... Oh, sound. Does it sound better? Well, my honest answer is no. I have noticed that I don't have to turn the volume up as much to get a comfortable sound level. Some familiar music has 'seemed' more detailed, but I'm still tweaking and learning.

And we both know the ability to hear is precious, any loss of that preciousness is irreversible.
Utterly, implicitly, and unequivocally. ;)

My wife is still asleep, so I am presently listening to a volume of -55.0 dB on my Denon. :D

YPAO will set any speaker to large if it can play 80Hz I believe.

In running my YPAO, I set all my speakers to small so that the sub would get ALL the bass. That's the only thing I touched in the settings. I ran YPAO three time for each of teh EQ setting, "natural, flat, and front" and stored each setting into memory. This way I could expereiment between teh three eq settings when the mood hit me.
