I love Athena speakers, but have heard some not so great reviews on their sub woofers..Should I buy a different make sub?? or is it better to have all speakers the same brand??? Or does Athena make a decent sub??

My Athena P400 sub is okay. Not great, not horrible, just okay. I wish I had gone for a different sub, but I got a great deal on it, and at the time, I didn't know a whole lot, and figured that it's best to have the sub match my other speakers (in other words, that they should all be the same brand).

Athena subs in general are . . . okay. Not great, not horrible, just okay. Would I recommend getting the P400? Probably not, unless you find a superb deal like I did. I think it was SheepStar who described the P400 as light and boomy. I'd have to agree with that assessment.

The sub does not need to be from the same manufacturer. The frequencies that subs reproduce are so low that you can't really notice any difference between a similar or different brand of sub in terms of timbre-matching.

I hear HSU and SVS make pretty good subs. Hopefully someday I'll upgrade to one of these.

cheers,

The sub is the exception to the rule that all speakers should match. We would need to know your room size in cubic feet, and your sub woofer budget to comment on what might work best for you.

I have Athenas, myself, and went with an SVS sub (read the same reviews!). It compliments them beautifully! No need to worry about matching when you're talking subs. However, as stated above, for real advice on subs, some room dimensions along with size and budget restrictions are needed. Hsu and Velodyne are also highly recommended names...be sure to research in that forum!

Which model Athenas do you run?

As some of the folks above mentioned, it won't be necessary to have your sub from the same manufacturer as your speakers.

While some folks haven't been overly thrilled w/some of Athena's sub offerings, I'm using a AS-P4000 in my secondary setup and it does a pretty decent job with movies and music. It's not much to look at, but for a small sized room (less than 1,800 cubic feet), it does a solid job when not overdriven and within reasonable means. I was able to pick one up for less than $200 shipped and in this price range, I don't think you're going to find much better. I have an SVS 20-39 PCi in my main setup, so I know what tight, deep bass should sound like and the P4000 isn't a bad option for the money.

Also noted above, if you can provide your room dimensions, budget and intended use (movies to music ratio, e.g. 50/50, 70/30, etc.) we may be able to suggest some options for you.... -TD
