Another snake oil promise

I saw the "SRS iWOW" and instantly thought, "ShamWow". :D

Call me stupid, but is this really snake oil? There are receivers that have algorithms that are supposed to do the same thing, right?

I have a hard time believing that any algorithm can replace what was taken out of the sound. Every sound is so unique. All the overtones are emphasized at different volumes. This is what makes every person, instrument, and thing sound different. This is very true when you have the same instrument played by different people. It'll sound different every time.

Of course, the mp3 can be improved upon by the algorithm filling in the gaps where clipping of the sound wave occurred. That I don't have a hard time believing.

This is not snake oil in the same sense exotic wire or magic rocks.

SRS has been around for years in all kinds of TV's boom boxes, walkman's, and lower end stereos. I believe it is some kind of stereo enhancement and base boost. They probably just do a cheep "surround sound" simulation by separating the R+L and R-L and filter them, then mix them back together at varying levels depending on frequency. Maybe throwing a little delay or phase shift in.

Now whether this sounds better is a matter of opinion. MY little Samsung YEP has a simmiler 3D sound mode. It's nice on some music but sucks on others.

SRS, BBE?

well... different.

I'll stick to my "non dynamic" MP3's on my iPod. Save the $80 and get gas for my motorcycle :D
