Another Receiver upgrade.

Been messing around and now getting serious...Believe me, I've read a lot of the threads but buying a new receiver is not easy. Opinions please (serious critics appreciated).

My current system:
Onkyo TX-SR601 (85w/channel)
Fronts: Klipsch RF-5
Center: Klipsch RC35
Sub: Klipsch RSW-10
Surrounds: Def Tech BP-6 (my old fronts).
Screen: Toshiba 30" HDTV (picture tube) with HDMI in.
DVD: Sony NC-665p (progressive) optical audio and componenet video out.
Cable: Scientific Atlanta 8000HD with component, optical and a DVI (??) out.

Living Room listening area: Stucco walls (lots of curvy things). Wood floor with 60% carpeting. Primary listening is done about 12 feet from front of system.

Plan: upgrade receiver next.
DVD is probably a weak link...on the horizon.

Uses: I love movies but I love music most. System must be music capable in all respects first. Music DVDs are my largest source collection Examples: Diana Krall, Allison Krause, Steely Dan, Cream, David Byrne, The Band, live classical performances.

Focus currently on Yamaha rx-v2600 for power and quality upgrade. HDMI seems like a bonus. I'm aware of older concerns about mating yammis with Klipsch; however, at this quality point, I expect a "neutral" amp. I love the detailed sound now coming from the RF-5 pair. Only other option considered is the Denon 3806 but no way to compare these (I've heard only a little about Pioneer Elite). I'm going almost solely by this site's recommendation for product of the year and awaiting the upcoming review.

Comments, suggestions?

(incidental: Can DVI out from cable box be converted for HDMI into yammi? Would you do this?).

thanks.
Roger

System Upgrade

First, decide what you think is missing from your current setup before spending money on a receiver upgrade.

Klipsch are very effecient (your mains are 99dB @ 2.83 volts/1 meter) thus less require power to play loud. A cleaner amp stage in the new Yamaha might provide a slight upgrade but the power is probably not an issue. Your money might be better spent on matching Klipsch reference surrounds or a better sub to improve the HT experience. You might also consider rugs, wall hangings, or acoustic pannels to improve the acoustics of your room.

FYI, A DVI to HDMI calbe will send video to the Yamaha, your TV, or any other component, but it won't cary any audio signals.
