Another Reason I Wouldn't Live in the UK

Why take the TV? If they were using the built-in speakers so loud that it bothered their neighbors, then they got what they deserved. They should have been using external speakers and a sub to bother their neighbors. :D

WOW. Not sure how being to loud is a crime. Its a complaint not a law. If they tried taking my TV I would be in jail. There is no reson to remove private property. Man I guess the US does has its "up's" sometimes. Good read. thanks....

Those people had MULTIPLE complaints against them though, so it isn;t like someone complained and they came and took their stuff. I saw that article yesterday.

Yeah but thats like driving by a neighbors house that is exceptionally old and cranky and them phoning to the police several times that you are driving too fast. And then the cops just show up at your house one day and take your vehicle. Did they have a radar gun to actually measure your speed? NO!! It is just a point of annoyance with them and is there OPINION. Not the law.

The issue is there is no measured volume level that was exceeded. So how loud is too loud? Its a very relative thing. And if you don't know how loud too loud is then how would you begin to obey the rules?

You'd think that they would give them a warning first and even then that $h!t is just wrong. The term justifiable homicide comes to mind. You try to yank General Hospital on my g/f and see what happens.

http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/UK-News/Family-62-Inch-Plasma-TV-Confiscated-By-Rochdale-Council-Over-Nuisance-Noise-Complaints/Article/200903215240043?f=rss

Here's the article. Couple key points:

1) According to the text the family had been in trouble several times before with the city regarding noise.

2) Supposedly part of the city code allows the tv to be confiscated under its "Environmental Health Act"

3) The family can get the TV back after 28 days by paying a fine.

This really isn't the end of the world.... it does help to get the full story

Edit: Just found this article from the Daily Mail- http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1161183/Confiscated-benefit-familys-62in-TV-plagued-neighbours.html

According to authorities they have breached noise levels (and been warned) 8 times in the past couple years. They deserve what they got.

I had read the full story before posting and I still think it's bull.
How loud can you make a plasma television? Loud enough to bother the guy living across the street?

You take the guy to jail for disturbing the peace if that's the real problem. Confiscating a television is just absurd. So that will make the family quiet?

It's probably more likely that this was not considered a criminal law broken. So they used a property code enforcement action. In other words, something just as bad as a HOA.
