Another help me choose my system thread

Hey everyone.

Love this website. I've been using the reviews and the forums to help guide myself in the right direction, in what has become the begining of my adventure and addiction to the hifi/audiophile world. I apologize for posting such a generic thread and something that I'm sure you regulars get tired of seeing but I can't find any postings that are similar enough to my requirements that I think I could choose the right speakers for my application.

Right now I live in small apartment. The room the system will be in is about 12 ft long by 10 ft wide. I have $1500 to spend and I really hope to keep my price around that. The system will be used 95% for music and 5% for movies. I watch maybe 2 movies a week and honestly movies aren't that important to me. My current plan is to spend the 1500 on two bookshelf speakers, a sub, and a reciever. Then, when I get a house I'll convert the bookshelves to surrounds, pick up towers to replace them and obviously buy a center channel speaker to complete the package. Bookshelves as surrounds may not be optimal, but I'm sure they will meet my needs just fine.

How the speakers sound with music is extremely important to me. 5+ hours a weeknights and 10+ hours on weekends my current speakers bellow out music, so non-fatiguing is very important. I also have diverse musical tastes but I mostly listen to hard alternative, alternative and indie. Tool, Slipknot, Breaking Benjamin, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, NIN, Muse, etc. When I'm in a chill mood I'll also do techno, classical and jazz. Small bits of country and hip hop are mixed in if I'm in the right mood.

What really concerns me after reading through various thread and also doing some listening tests is that I frequently listen to death metal, cds released by local bands and live bootlegs. Knowing that all of these things are poorly produced and recorded doesn't make me enjoy them any less. Basically, I need your help in finding a very forgiving and laid back speaker. If I have to give up some clarity and flat/truthfullness in response to be able to listen to some of my favorite albums without grimacing b/c of the way they (really) sound, I'm willing to do that.

Speaker wise, so far I have listened to
Polk Tsi - Sounded good but nothing special.
Klipsh - to sharp for my taste in music.
KEF - seemed to lack a bit in the bass department.

The recent shootout article seemed to suggest Yamaha and Behringer. I don't like the idea of the Behringer because its a studio monitor, which in my mind says precision response, which in turn will likely lead to poorly recorded things (things I enjoy) sounding like ****. If those assumptions are wrong, please let me know. The Yamaha's look interesting, but I do have a higher budget than what the article had, so if there is something better I'd definately consider those instead. I've read lots of suggestions for more obscure brands on this website, PSB, Energy, Wharfedale come to mind quickly. Not being able to easily listen to any of these more obscure brands, I'm hoping your expertise coupled with knowing what kind of stuff I listen to will help me windle down the mail audition list or possibly just help me settle on speaker without spending several more weeks researching.

Thanks a ton for you help. Sorry for the long post.

thanks for the replies guys.

R-Carpenter: I'll check out those brands on ebay. Thanks.

CraigV: Theres not much activity in that thread yet but I'll keep an eye on it. Right now all it really says is don't buy Polk. I'm fine with that and was leaning that direction anyhow.

what I'm really concerned about and what I haven't seen covered anywhere else is finding a speaker that is high quality engouh and sharp enough to be considered hifi but not so precise that it makes some of my favorite CDs sound bad--again, I do enjoy listening to some death metal and local stuff that was recorded in studios whose gear probably isn't even worth what I'm putting into this system. I guess I'm just trying to figure out if somebody makes a *very* forgiving and laid back speaker of high quality or if my musical tastes pretty much dictate me going with a cheaper line of speaker by any given manufactuer in order to keep the precision and HF detail down. hopefully that makes sesne. Thanks again for your help.

That's why I suggested checking out the KEF series

speaker suggestion

dminnich, given your listening proclivities, I would consider the x-ls classic speakers from av123. You have to buy them used, as they are no longer in production, but I don't think that is a bad thing. Price is right, probably $200ish. Some nice veneers and a very nice satin black, depending on your taste and what you can find.

Regarding the sound, these speakers were highly regarded, with the main criticism being some lack of detail on high end. I found them to be very forgiving, and lots of fun on my heavier stuff. No death metal for me, but old Sabbath, Deep Purple, AC/DC, Stooges, and the like sounded better than I remembered. They also do justice to other genres.

I'm sure there are plenty of other good options, but check around on AgoN or av123 classifieds (forum is read-only but you can browse and PM people) for the x-ls. I think it will be tough to beat the combo of price + build quality + sound quality + forgiving nature. Note, there is also an x-ls encore version, which is newer and listed for maybe $100/pair more. Different tweeter; more detail. I never heard these speakers, but logic would say they would be less forgiving than the x-ls classics.

I'm going to have to audition some of these Behringer's I keep hearing how great they are.

bandphan: Thanks i'll start reasearching all of those brands.

droht: Thanks! That is the exact type of reply I am looking for. Kind of worried though, I can't find any information about the speakers you mention on av123's site. Not even under the "retired products" section. Am I missing something?

If anybody else has any suggestions, please chime in.

Alright. I've done some more net crawling and narrowed down my choices.

I thought I'd post some links in case anybody else comes across this thread.

First off, the suggestion for the x-ls's was spot on. I've read several others who really liked the speaker and found it to be warm and laid back. Too bad av123 doesn't currently stock them and I want to buy something from a fairly recent/static line so I can upgrade to 5.1 later.

I eventually landed on audioreview's forms
"forums.audioreview.com/showthread.php?t=28352&page=2"

This lead to a few other links
"smarthouse.com.au/Reviews/Home_Cinema/W4H9N8H4"
"avreview.co.uk/news/article/mps/UAN/474/v/3/"

These made me want to buy either Monitor Audio B2 or Wharfedale 9.2s. I'm going to try to audtion them but right now my gut is point at the Wharfedales b/c I've read where several ppl said they are almost to laid back or too laid back for some peoples tastes.

Thanks for all your help.

PS: The fact that I can't post links is understandable but dumb.

I found the PSB Image B25s to be pretty laid back as well.

AVrat: Thanks for another great suggestion and more choices :D  .

You seemed to be dead on based on a couple reviews I read and I found another forum post where people were arguing about the best between the PSB B25 and Wharfedale 9.2 in a room almost the exact same size as mine.

"hifivision.com/speakers/3265-speaker-suggestions-12-x-13-bedroom.html"

Now I just got to decide what I want.
