Another dumb question

On a system that is 5.1 surround, I'm pretty certain that the "5" represents 5 speakers, but what does the "1" represent?

More precisely, the .1 is the Low Frequency Effects (LFE) channel which is most often played by the subwoofer. The LFE channel is bass only and generally below 80 Hz (although it is allowed to be as high as 120 Hz).

If you don't have a subwoofer and set the front speakers to Large, they will play the LFE.

It is the essential 1/10th of signal without which you will not have the real fun :D
