There is a lot of scientific data that supports this and a panel of 99 Nobel Prize winner scientists have already submitted papers on Global Warming to the White House. The problem is, our government, as well as other countries politicians are taking an approach of adaptation to Global Warming rather than reducing or combating it through refocusing our energy usage, and using alternative means.

Here is some info to whet your whistle on this topic:

1) National Academy of Sciences 2001 Report, “Climate Change Science: An Analysis of Some Key Questions”, commissioned by President George W. Bush.

Specifically, the report “originated from a White House request to help inform the Administration's ongoing review of U.S. climate change policy. In particular, the written request ( Appendix A) asked for the National Academies' “assistance in identifying the areas in the science of climate change where there are the greatest certainties and uncertainties,” and “views on whether there are any substantive differences between the IPCC [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] Reports and the IPCC summaries.”

http://books.nap.edu/books/0309075742/html/

2) US EPA website, some great, general information on climate change.

http://yosemite.epa.gov/oar/globalwarming.nsf/content/index.html

3) USGS website, more general information on climate change.

http://geochange.er.usgs.gov/

4) NASA website, more information on climate change.

http://gcmd.gsfc.nasa.gov/

5) NOAA website, even more information on climate change.

http://www.noaa.gov/climate.html

6) US Global Change Research Program

http://www.usgcrp.gov/

7) Senator Bingaman’s climate legislation link:

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=1&vote=00149

SEC. 16__. SENSE OF THE SENATE ON CLIMATE CHANGE.

(a) Findings.—Congress finds that—

(1) greenhouse gases accumulating in the atmosphere are causing average temperatures to rise at a rate outside the range of natural variability and are posing a substantial risk of rising sea-levels, altered patterns of atmospheric and oceanic circulation, and increased frequency and severity of floods and droughts;

(2) there is a growing scientific consensus that human activity is a substantial cause of greenhouse gas accumulation in the atmosphere; and

(3) mandatory steps will be required to slow or stop the growth of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.

(b) Sense of the Senate.—It is the sense of the Senate that Congress should enact a comprehensive and effective national program of mandatory, market-based limits and incentives on emissions of greenhouse gases that slow, stop, and reverse the growth of such emissions at a rate and in a manner that—

(1) will not significantly harm the United States economy; and

(2) will encourage comparable action by other nations that are major trading partners and key contributors to global emissions.

For draft legislative text supplied to us by Bingaman's staff see:

http://www.climatenetwork.org/uscanweb/Bingamandiscdraft.PDF

http://www.climatenetwork.org/uscanweb/Bingamansectionbysection.doc

This one is very revealing. Especially since it shows both the USA and Australia are the largest emitters of greenhouse gases. Click on Emissions “How Much we Emit”. I had no idea about Australia. I figured China but they aren’t even on here! Note how European countries are much lower, likely do to their superior infrastructure of mass transit.

Regarding Ocean Currents

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-1602579,00.html

add to the list - increased duration and intensity of fires in drought prone areas - its already happening - shifts in species distributions with high elevation, high latitude species vulnerable to extirpations - potential shut down of the marine currents (the oceanic conveyor belt) by warming and loss of oceanic current mixing - catastrophic on a global scale - melting of polar ice caps and high elevation glaciers and associated increases in sea levels potentially affecting 2/3 of the world's population which is coastal - in Oregon economists are projecting $365 million annual losses attributed to global warming related to increased fire events - need I go on?
Uh, thanks, Gene.

Anyone have any antidepressants?

no no no, this is what you do.

You move to British Columbia. IF the earthquake happens, it will be under water, not inland.

Ohhh, look at this, Big Victoria there to absorb the wave, and everyone else is safe.

I know NOAA is still running scared since hurricane Katrina, but this is ridiculous! Now the latest predictions place landfall sometime Monday afternoon. And they still don't have any idea what the storm is going to do.

And they already issued evacuation orders for the Keys earlier this week. I'd say a weeks notice on the evacuation is a little premature.

At least in Florida we don't blame the Feds and the rest of the country for not sending us buses and picking us up!

Gene: Yeah, I know, global warming....blah, blah, blah. "We're goin' to die!"

not necessarily, but in 50-75 years our grandchildren may be using a canoe for commuting instead of a car

Well, good news is the storm seems to be weakening and the forward speed is picking up. It should hopefully just be a bad wind storm and nothing worse.

Bad news is it's moving further South toward my friends and family (sorry Brian:( )

I have to go into work tonight and work through the storm at the emergency operations center:mad:

WISH US LUCK

(Yeah Gene, I know, we're gonna die!:D )

Yeah, I am going through this right now. It just seems like a wind storm.
Nothing to speak of at all. Actually not one drop of rain outside at the moment, just winds that are gusting around here. (probably close to 90-100 mph gusts) Funny though it seems realy dry???????????

EDIT:: I have to revise that above statement. Its now 5:30am here, and has now become a little wet outside. And winds are picking up. Hmm, being my mother lives in a area where winds get worse, (on open area, backyard is a canal) and water rises quick. I hope she is ok...
I am pretty safe on the third floor condo thats been here for 30 years.
(Famous last words:eek: )
Seriously though, I am in a area with few tiled roofs. So roof tiles don't fly around here and bust windows...
Tree branches usually don't make it to 30-40 feet in the air. Just shingles and tiles.
The shape of a shingle/tile obviously will go further/higher/faster.

She (mom), usually gets a few shingles torn off her foor. But as of yet (last 20 years) She has only had one broken window.

The eye of hurrricane Wilma came on shore at about 6:30am EST. The winds have intensified to 125mph, a strong catagory 3 storm.

South Florida will be feeling the worst of the storm very shortly.

Unfortunately no "refreshments" allow in the EOC.:(

Oh, and your avatar looks MUCH better in person. You should take the drive to the Seattle area and check it out.

.....I talked with Brian a couple of hours ago in Fort Lauderdale and he said it was more than what they were expecting and he was very concerned....he said no windows had blown out yet, but water was blowing under his condo door, and the electricity had been off for a few hours....he said he had plenty of water, juices, and food to go for days....I just tried back and can't get through....let's keep him and Majorloser in our thoughts.....

Man, I didn't realize you are there, too. Hang tough, Brian. Everywhere you find a hatch...batten the damn thing. Much good luck to you and yours.

Welcome to Hell

Well, we are almost done with this. Just getting the back side of the storm now. Talked to Brian a few times. He's OK but his condo is wet. Windows busted out. I'm in central Florida and Brian is in South Florida. He got it worse than me this year (his turn:eek: ). A large part of Florida is without power. Large areas of South Florida, including Fort Lauderdale, are without water. Telephone service is erratic. Cell phones are still working, though (mostly). Many large trees are down throughout southern Florida causing underground utilities to get ripped out of the ground.

I just got back from a large gas line fire. A high voltage power line fell. It took out a large gas line and a 16" water line. The power line lit the gas. It was actually quite cool looking. Water shooting up into the air with large flames shooting out of it, like something from Las Vegas. The power had to be shut down, then the gas and then the water. CLUSTER F#CK!

At least I have power, water and telephones at my office. Air conditioning is good! Of course my wife is home without power or phones and is freaking out. Luckily I built my home to a much stronger standard. The most I will have to deal with is a couple of downed trees and maybe a couple of missing ridge cap shingles. I haven't had any sleep for 2 days prepping for this at home and work. I might take a nap on an air bed in my office later (if they'll leave me alone).

rjbudz: I've been wearing my Beaver's tee shirt all night as a protest to Florida today. I'd take the rains there anyday. I laugh at what you call heavy rain:D

gene: I'm not dead yet. Maybe next time!

.....I talked to Brian again about two hours ago, Majorloser, and we are certainly glad to hear you and yours are ok....Brian said he braced himself against a thick glass door to the patio, I think it was, for about an hour trying to get it to not break....he said he finally began to fear it breaking anyway, and got away from it, but it held....he said water was gurgling under windows until finally about 7 windows broke and he's got a lot of water inside.....ruined one main speaker is all he lost of his system, though....Brian was over at his Brother's house at the time of the call 2 hours ago, and they had a chain saw trying to rid the entrances of downed trees, mercy....yeah, Brian said he had his wrist braces on, they had some work ahead of them, and he heard they might be out of electricity for as much as 5 days....his Mother has a generator....if I talk again to him tonight, I'll get back.....
