should be easy to visualize. 61 inch dlp tv taking up the whole top shelf of a 60 inch wide tv stand. 3 inches to the left is the opening to the hallway, 3 inches to the right is the front door inswing leaving no room for speaker stands or a longer cabinet.

stand is a basic two shelf model. this one has the largest shelf clearance I have found at 10 inches, enough for a bigger speaker like the infinity p163, ascend 170, or DefTech 45 to lay horizontally, or a smaller one like the s30, nht zero, or psb b4 to sit vertically:

Hsu and Klipsch might make sense here because their horn-loaded tweeters may make them less susceptible for the negative influences of nearby reflection if you need to place them in a cabinet. I have heard plenty of both, the Hsu is certainly tamer than the Klipsch, but if you want some of the dynamic power and directivity of horns but are not a fan of the Klipsch snappiness and sizzling hot highs, the Hsu's should be considered. But for a large room and long distances from speaker to listening position, nothing beats Klipsch for that.

I would not lay the bigger speakers sideways, it will effect the
overall sound quality. > You can put some nice speakers on the
second shelf. Do not put speakers on the bottom shelf.

It got lost a few posts back, but if I went with the NHT zeros vertically would I have an issue with the high crossover? I read that setting the sub to 80 will lose some frequencies from the nht, but setting it to 100 would cause directionality and voices from the sub.

You need to set the Absolute around 100 hz - the speaker that you
passed on can be crossed lower - however 100 hz is workable, and
is not that bad. NHT is a nice speaker.

How many components do you have to fit on the shelves?

Just throwin out ideas to see if I inspire anything.

Something styled like this one would allow you to take the two side doors off and remove the shelves to give you three 18"Wx18"Hx19"D cavities. You'd have to see about removing the back to let the speakers breath, but it gives you more room to play with

Maybe if you put the TV on a riser like this.

Now you can have a little bit of extra height.

you are talking about the s30 right? being set to cross at 80 i mean? haven't passed them over, just doing my homework. I think I am just a little biased about smaller speakers for some reason, I have the same reservations about the NHT, especially after the high crossover issue.

no speakers on the bottom shelf? would it work if i angled them up a bit with some rubber footings or something because many of the tv stands have a larger clearance on the bottom shelf.

my current stand has the following:
horizontal left, center, horizontal right speakers
ps3, apple tv, receiver, and an xbox 360 stacked on top of the fios box

we looked at a stand very similar to that one in ashley furniture, but i was really concerned about the speaker being in an enclosed cube with only one side open. That was another reason I had the infinity on top of my list, the front port would allow me to get a stand with a closed back. I like the riser idea, but i think i would still be stuck with the same big speaker sideways or little speaker vertical decision.

What ever speaker you choose is up to you

No speakers on the bottom shelf - it is enough compromise,
putting them in a shelf. You should be able to work out 10
inches at least, on the upper shelf.

I would not by a stand with enclosed shelving, that would
be more of a compromise.

I agree about the enclosed cabinet, I learned that lesson trying to work an ipod dock in a bookcase.

I just took another look at the s30 and noticed it has a rear port. While they would easily fit vertically on an upper shelf, would that cause an issue if the stand has a solid back?

Not that big a deal>>
The shelf is 18 inches deep with open sides - if you by them,
put some bumper feet on the bottom, with enough room that
the top of the speakers do not touch the top shelf, and make
sure that the front of your speakers, are at the front edge of
the cabinet. Also, do this with any speaker.

You can also get some black acoustic foam, and pad the back wall.

Has anyone pulled off the horizontal orientation successfully or is it always a crash and burn?

If not, the options for speakers under 10 inches high are:

cambridge s30
psb b-4
nht absolute zero(still concerned about the high crossover point)
klipsch rb-41

There are only a few that are designed/engineered to work that way.
And, they are not the bigger ones you listed.

Rearrange the room so that you have room for upright bookshelf speakers :D. In all seriousness, you will waste your money getting something half @$$ed or something good but not using it as intended.

The absolute zeros were at the top of my list until I read about the difficulty blending them with a sub. I don't think I want to set the crossover at 100 and deal with the possibility of sound bouncing back and forth, especially since the sub is in the back of my room.

Hsu tech support said that if I open the cabinet and rotate the horn tweeter it would be ok to lay them sideways. It sounded reasonable to me so I guess they are back in the mix.

but setting it to 100 would cause directionality and voices from the sub.
I've never had that issue while using the NHT SuperZero for 10 yrs.

Some experts even recommend using a XO of 120Hz-150Hz on some of the best subwoofers out there like Funk Audio subs. No voices coming out of subs. :D

BTW, did the HTM review of the Absolute Zero say this, or just hearsay from forums? :D

Key thing is having a great capable subwoofer or 2.

For example, Nathan Funk, one of the best Sub minds out there, recommends trying XO higher up from 120Hz+.

No worries if you have great subs.
