Hi there.

Would this also apply to lobbing on homeopathic, psychics, etc. without first-hand experience, irresponsible? I am curious on your take on it.

I'm not so sure, is that what Robinson really said, that only positive coverage of the AV industry would save it?

Greetings Forum Members,

I realize I'm a visitor in your house, so thank you. I appreciate Gene opening this discussion up to you and this forum, however, I believe my larger point may be misinterpreted. I do not believe all AV coverage going forward needs to be purely positive as the title of this thread would have you believe. I just believe that one should not, or at least try hard not to, pass judgement, good or bad, prematurely. Gene and the staff at Audioholics are smart, capable people who obviously know their stuff, however, that doesn't excuse the fact that no one on the Audioholics staff has heard Dolby Atmos in the home, for themselves. And still they persist on drawing a great many conclusions without having first-hand knowledge or experience on the subject. Had Audioholics or Gene himself demoed Atmos first and come away disliking it, then I would take no issue with any criticism, jab or whatnot that he cared to lob in Dolby's direction. But to lob based on no first-hand experience is, in my opinion, irresponsible. And Gene is not alone, all publications do this from time to time, even I have done it in my 10 plus years working in and around this industry. It's human nature to a certain extent. This was the point I was trying to make in my article, for it is this type of reporting or pot-stirring that can, over time, damage the hobby.

If any of you have questions, comments or concerns and would like to share those with me here on this forum, I'm open to any and all discussion. Thanks for your time and consideration.

Andrew
Okay, that's what I thought, and he does make some good points.

The way every incremental change/feature has been touted as the next greatest advancement since the cure to Polio was discovered has kept this industry alive for decades now. They play off of Audio Nervosa and some fools desire to have the latest and greatest thing whether they can benefit from it or not.

An honest apprasial of this stuff is a welcome change in this hobby.

FWIW in the insurance market, a lot of this is called "churning".

An honest appraisal? They didn't even test it or listen to it, so that doesn't really add up. Also not sure on your assessment of every single advancement. Maybe if you're consuming the related media every day touting the latest advancement it'll seem that way, but your typical consumer still probably doesn't even know what Atmos is.

But you were impressed with Audioholic's Atmos piece and that's fine.

A lot of recent "advances" have not really been in the interests of improving this hobby for the everyman that is their target market. Sometimes, the sacrifices needed to appreciate some of these "benefits" far outweigh the perceived gain. The cool reception to 3D, where one needs special glasses and preferred seating to enjoy it, should illustrate that quite well.

The requirement to careful placement and positioning of eleven speakers, some of which are dependent on room reflections in an environment which, for most people is shared with daily living functions is the industry shamelessly begging people who are most likely not using their system top it's maximum potential, but gullible to heavy marketing, to spend more money to upgrade to something even more likely to be underutilized.

Realizing this up front and making those thoughts public is not doing a disservice to the public.

Now, wen thy com out with an affordabe holodeck, give me a call.

Guys;

My article about the Dolby Atmos Elevation speakers is live. Here is the official forum thread for you to discuss and cast your vote.

Thanks.

Hey Gene stop plugging these articles, enough already :D, lol... I am sure the r&d guys at dobly would love to see your "homemade atmos speaker" classic, good thing you took a picture because I wouldn't have believed you actually did that with out it.... I like it...
This stuff is getting way to technical... Dolby will be selling ceilings pretty soon with the speakers already built in...
I was out to dinner with a few other a/v guys and I came up with the idea {well kind of stole it, because they already sell them as premade offices}, to buy shipping containers and turn them into Home theater additions, all setup and ready to go, HVAC, screen, projector, surround sound, seating, carpet curtains, ect... You just plop it on your property and plug it in, you finish the outside to look like a shed or what ever the customer wants and ship them all over the place.. they make houses out of these things why not a theater, its better than using you basement and they are 40' long x 8ft wide with 102" ceilings...

Vinyl vs Dolby Atmos

I just noticed that our 1+ year old article on Vinyl vs CD still gets MORE traffic than ALL of our Dolby Atmos articles combined.

Do you care more about ancient Vinyl than new tech like Dolby Atmos?

On the plus side, I have read some of your reviews, and I agree with most of your positive opinions (including Definitive Tech BP7000SC, Crown XLS2000, B&W Diamond, etc.). There are many good things out there for sure. Probably more good than bad. But it's okay to disagree. ;)
Once again, you forgot Parasound. Liquid baby :p :D

At the time of AH's first Atmos video, not much data was available about up-firing speakers.
Dolby and Pioneer had artists renditions of up-firing sound bouncing perfectly onto the listener from above.
Gene and others knew damn well that sound produced those drivers does is not directional and the bank shot is unreliable.
Even now, when we know about the notch filters, those diagrams are misleading.

So how does this related toward positive coverage?
IMO, overselling products harms the industry and Dolby is selling hard.

You might find more than a handful of customers like their Atmos speakers at first and then discover they don't mate will with their systems.
Or worse yet, it occurs to them that helicopter is supposed to be above, like it was in the theater.
When that occurs, consumers looking for truthful information will come here, reminded once again, they cannot trust those "positive sites". ;)

I saw the Pioneers today, I was there a day too early and didn't read the fine print:0
Cedia web page said 10-13 sept.. Classes only today- no exhibition :( but went to room 705 ( following the Audioholics arrows on the floor) anyway and they had the static displays up, so got to look but not listen.
The towers were smaller than I anticipated and fit/ finish looked to be the same as the FS/BS series.
Not a whole lot of angle on the top drivers.
Will know more after a demo tomorrow.
Cheers, Mac
Edit: should have put this under the "what are Atmos" thread

Nice so Audioholics banners are visible? Can you post a few images of them?

I will start an Atmos Demo Thread in the General forum where people can share their Atmos CEDIA demo experience. Thanks for helping out while I stay behind this year with the wifey.
