Well, not new per se, but more like an obvious transition that should have occurred the moment the industry execs started to whine about CD sales slipping... With the advent of music videos, who wants to just
listen to music anymore?
Even if you just "roll tape" on a couple of cameras during sessions this is a no-brainer and hardly adds anything to the cost of production (if they don't want it to).
What's amazing is that it has taken this long for the record industry to get a clue that there needs to be more value in the provided music formats. With surround sound exploding onto the market place and people getting all jazzed about display sales and home theater it always bugged me that the existing formats of Dolby Digital and DTS were not expanded upon for music in a broader scale.
The fact that you can now hardly find a set top CD-only player should have been a little clue.
Let's hope this marks the beginning of a new trend. In my opinion it's not a format change so much as a shift of the music industry's thought process.
