Wondering how the Anchor Bay video processing on Marantz compares with the Reon system on the Onkyo's? Anyone compare these two?

I thought Marantz was using i-Chips Technology deinterlacers now.

Specifically I was looking at the marantz AV8003.

Video scaling and processing by Anchor Bay Technology
- Precision Video ScalerTM allows up to 1080p scaling
- Full 10bit Video Processing
I am looking at upgrading my processor/receiver.
So far am looking at the Onkyo 906, the Marantz AV8003, Denon's AVR 4308 or 3803, and Integra's Pre DHC 9.9 or receiver DTR 8.9. I have a dedicated amp, so don't really need the power, am using Panny's new Blu ray -60, and have a Toshiba HD-DVD D3 player, along with Xbox 360. I thought it would be nice to have a nice video processor on board. Seems like the choices are HQV or the Anchor Bay on the marantz, which I know nothing about. Do you think these processors are better than what my HD-DVD or BluRay have on board, or should I just stick to the source for processing??

Depends on your expectations of the scaling. I found little difference with the ABT chip in the Yammy 3900 i previously owned. Then again i dont have a projector with a large screen.

The Reon gets the most praise, but i know the higher end ABT chips are just as good.

Dont think just in the name, but the implementation:)
Bandphan is totally right. Don't think a Reon in a Yamaha is the same as a Reon in a Denon. The new Reon-VX is supposed to be just as capable as a Realta, but it all depends on how the manufacturer has the chipset built, and what features are enabled, etc.

I still believe that the processors in your source components are more important (and more capable) than what is going to come along in 98% of receivers.

If a processor is that important to you, I'd look at a DVDO Edge. They are the best bang-for-buck standalone VP at this point in time.

Hm. I have a Samsung BD-P2550 with the Reon, and a Marantz AV8003 but I haven't tried its scaler. I should give it a go to see how it does.

Thanks for the replies. I will look into the DVDO. Also, I have kind of been waiting for the Sherwood Newcastle R972 to arrive. I hear it may be soon. I like the Trinov Optimiser for room EQ, and the HQV is just a bonus. Always a tough decision on which way to go.
Is it most of your opinions then that my Toshiba D3 and Panny BluRay BD-60 have better processing than most receivers so the receiver video processing is a redundant option? Thanks.

From what I gathered from most reviews, anything that has the Reon/Realta in tested good with the HQV test patterns but under real life viewing conditions most BD players (even the low end Samsung: http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/hd-dvd-bluray/2915/samsung-bd-p1500-blu-ray-disc-player.html) will look pretty good without the Reon or ABT.

The newest HD DVD models are the A3, A30 and A35. The A30 and A35 have the ABT and they are excellent upscalers. Of all the upscaling players, I thought the cheap Toshiba XDE500 is the clear winner. The latest Panasonic BD players also score well in recent reviews and they don't have the Reon in them either.

My suggestion is, don't pick your AVR just because it has the Reon. Your media players will do fine on their own.

thanks again.
I am using an epson 7500ub with a Screen Research 1.0 (maybe 1.1) gain, 110" white screen. Seating is at 12 feet front row and about 16 feet second row. Atlantic Technology 6200e speakers with di/bi surrounds and an IB sub system. Atlantic Technology 7 x 120 amplifier. Xbox 360. Direct TV satelite.
My room is a strange setup. here is a link from awhile back about my room:

I am hoping the EQ will make it sound even better, so I like the option of the Trinnov on the Sherwood Newcastle or Oddyssey PRO on the others. The Video is secondary to me, but of interest.
