This my be a simple question, but are you supposed to connect analog cables to your dvd player for cd's? I currently just use a optical digital connection from my dvd player to my receiver, would i benefit from connecting an analog cable for the cd's I play? Thanks

It really depends on what equipment you have. The DVD player and receiver each have their own DAC. If you prefer the sound of the analog outs on your DVD player, use analog cables. If you prefer the sound of the DAC of the Receiver, use a digital cable. For most people and most equipment, I think running a digital out to the receiver is the simplest way to go.

I can think of at least two other reasons to use the analog connections:

1. If you need to be able to hear the CD in zone2. Nearly all of the receivers we discuss here require an analog connection if that source is to be played in a different zone.

2. If your receiver and dvd/cd player are the same brand and can be daisy chained together to enable some convenience features. Onkyo Remote Interactive (RI), JVC CompuLink, and Sony S-Link are examples. With the Onkyo at least, you MUST make an analog connection in addition to the digital connection if you want to use the RI features.
