Thank you for using the word "seem". No, I did not mean to imply that at all. I think most people can hear the difference between a $200 receiver and a $2000 amp but ...
But these three audiophiles and 'golden ears' couldn't differentiate a $300 older Yam integrated from a $15k monoblocks:D

But, it is only 3 subjects. :D

You know, I've got an older Yamaha 2 channel receiver, and it's a very, very good sounding unit. They were well made back in the day. I can't vouch for the newer stuff, as I haven't used the new equipment. JVC also sold some nice sounding equipment back then. It's my opinion that build quality has gone slightly down hill in recent years, in favor of cost cutting and profit margins. (Don't laugh at the CD player, it still works  )

Back to the original question, I think 99% of people will agree that the Mac will not sound twice as good as the rotel , maybe closer to 20% - 25% better with a great pre-amp and quality speakers ! But there's always that other 1%.

Me laugh at something you have and works??? LOL :D
NEVER:D Now, if it was broken and still taking up space there, I'd be curious if it was old memories keeping it there or an art object I missed :D

ps. I'd cover that glass stain on that nice furniture or refinish it:)

LOL. That's my basement system for when we're playing pool/air hockey/darts/ping pong, or when I'm trying to bench press 120lbs. (yeah, I say I'm starting to work out again, then reality sets in) That was my dresser when I was a kid. It's due for the trash bin, but makes a nice audio rack, as well as storage for the ping pong balls, the old set of cue balls, some deflated rafts, drop cloths, etc... It's actually decent wood - maple, and made much better then the crap they sell today. Even sports dove tail joints. I've had to glue the drawers a few times, but what the heck. It's in the basement.

I threw out a sweet Toshiba boom box with auto-reverse that included a short wave radio a few years ago. Mtry - you would have cried. It got me through H.S. Never forget how cool it was to record directly from FM to cassette. Man, we thought we were stealing music back in the day. Now with internet and MP3, there's no comparison. We actually had to purchase cassette tapes to "steal" music. Nothing beat those TDK SA90 tapes. ;)

I remember wishing the DJ would shut up so I could get a good copy! :D
I had to listen real hard to the clues he'd be giving as to what the next song is and then sprint for the record button.
It also felt like finding treasure when a "hard to find" song comes on and you were there just in time to record it.

I had an old Radio Shack deck with IR remote. Could catch those cues from across the room.

mine wasn't even good enough to be called a boom box. :)
it was the size of about 3 walkmans side by side. (cassette walkmans, mind you)
