Hi all,

I am going to buy a set of KEF KHT3005SE http://www2.kef.com/GB/SurroundSound/KHT/3000 and i am looking for a good amp to drive them. I have been thinking Yamaha RX-V765. http://www.yamaha-uk.com/av_amps_receivers/?product_id=261
Is this enough or do i need a bigger model such as Yamaha RX-V1065 http://www.yamaha-uk.com/av_amps_receivers/?product_id=260 ?

Is a Yamaha a good buy to drive these satellite speakers? I know that larger speakers sound better, but my wife doesn't want large speakers around :)

Any suggestions where to get a bargain in the UK would be appreciated! Also any advice on cables?

Thanks a million

You don't need that much power. These are very sensitive sattelite speakers you don't want to cross them below 100hz.

Beware of the fact the sub in that set is boomy. If possible a better sub is highly suggested.

An Onkyo 606 would be a perfect match for the low profile speakers.

Thanks for your advice! I went to hear these speakers at a local shop and was truly impressed by the detail that they offer. The set up was with an NAD amp and the power was truly impressive. The salesman said that the amp is 100 Watts per channel. To be honest, there was so much power going to the speakers that it was like that i could hardly hear the sub! So i am thinking that going for the Yamaha 95 watts per channel is enough really. I am not going to be listing to movies at high volumes anyway as i would be kicked out of the neighbourhood! :D

What do you mean by not crossing the speakers below 100Hz? Are you referring to the crossover frequency? I am seeing on Kef's website:

Crossover Frequencies Satellite - 2.2kHz, Centre - 500Hz, 2.2kHz

Frequency Response (+/-3dB) Satellite - 70Hz - 55kHz, Centre - 65Hz - 55kHz

Maximum Output Satellite - 108dB, Centre - 110dB

Thanks again!

He is talking about the crossover from the satellite to the subwoofer. Its where the satellite stops producing bass and the sub picks up the rest of bass. :) The Satellites in the Kef system go down to 70hz for the left and right and 65 hz for the center. So a 100hz crossover on the receiver is a good idea since its a gradual roll off. Maybe 90hz if the receiver offers it. This ensures the satellites don't produce bass that could damage them.

Most specs on receivers are not helpful. Yamaha makes good receivers though.

Crossovers are set on your receiver in the setup menu. Don't cross these lower than 100hz or they will distort. 120hz is what I cross my KEF eggs at and they sound superb. They are great little speakers, but not deep speakers.

Be careful. NAD rates their receivers honestly whereas Yamaha using the 1-2 channel, 1khz method. The NAD will deliver 100wpc whereas I'm sure the Yammie would not hit 95wpc. That said, if speakers are 8 ohms and sensitive enough, it won't matter.

Hi JZ,

Yes, the Yamaha RX-V765 is plenty to drive these KEF speakers, and the Yamaha receiver is a good match too for the KEF sound. Smart choice. :)
And No, you don't need the bigger model (RX-V1065).

And you are much better than us, for the best place in the UK about price on this Yamaha 765 receiver. Have you ever visited AVForums from UK? You'll get all you need from these guys over there. Ask Kingfats or Namuk, they know everything; about where you can get the best deal for the 765, and also about best value for cables. Just apply for membership. And say Hi to them from LOTR.

Cheers,

Bob
