ATI Technologies makes graphics cards and the GPU (Graphics Processor Units) chips for many top rated video cards for PCs. Also number two in its respective market, ATI was Microsoft's surprise pick to develop the GPU for its Xbox360. By purchasing ATI, AMD is making the statement that it plans to integrate graphics technologies into future CPUs.

I don't agree with this article. AMD and ATI are not number 2. They have difference purposes. ATI cards perform better on certain games (such as Half Life 2) and Nvidea cards on others (Doom3 for example).

Intel and AMD have always been for 2 different tasks. AMD gaming, Intel multitasking.

Number 2 refers to market share. AMD is number 2 to Intel and ATI is number 2 to NVidia.

I don't agree with this assumption.

I think the future in computers in relation to CPU/GPU will be modular designs.

What you have now with these two companies:
- Both have experience making production Chipsets (AMD: AMD8000, MPX ATI: XPRESS)
- ATI fabricating GPU's
- AMD fabricating CPU's with onboard Memory Controllers

I do believe what we could see in the future is a motherboard that has sockets for both a CPU and a GPU. This would allow users to upgrade their video processors the same as upgrading their CPU's.

That sounds like you support on board integration between CPU and GPU. It might not be the result of on-die extensions but it sure looks good for some level of graphics integration with the CPU.

Here is what AMD EVP Henri Richard said about that topic:

" In a multicore system on a chip, perhaps the CPU and GPU could be on the same die, for example."

Although he does add...

"That’s not for the short-term. That requires a lot of R&D and development, but it’s clearly a possibility. That is of course something that a lot of customers will be asking us about, and that we’ll be starting to think about. "

I think they will. But only time will tell. We're reaching the limit of silicone's usefulness in CPUs. There will be lots of clever ways to integrate mutliple cores with more and more parellel extensions.

Until we start making transistors out of lasers or DNA or something like that.

It's interesting to speculate, Wndr. But I suppose it could go either way.

What I think will happen is AMD will contine making CPU's as they always have and incorporate their dual core/64 bit/ yada yada yada into the graphic card's processor. How badass would it be to have a graphics card as powerful as your CPU?
