Amazon Echoes Are Now A Multiroom Speaker System

Amazon just released an Echo device update to allow Echoes, Echo Dots, and Echo Shows to act as a multi-room music system. I've tested it with my Echo Dots and it works, although I do suggest connecting better speakers. As I said in another post I'm using decent for the size and price powered speakers (Edifiers) with my Dots and will expand my zones to more rooms. Even better may soon be in order.

I'm guessing your speakers are connected to your dots via 3.5mm cable? I know when playing multiroom audio it disconnects any speaker in that group that is using Bluetooth until multiroom audio playback is stopped. I'm guessing it's due to the lag introduced by Bluetooth, but it's pretty annoying. Also, the lack of ability to have a device in more than one group is bothersome, but hopefully they will get that fixed in the future. For now, I'm just happy to have the option, can't wait to see what other upgrades come in the future.

I'm using the 3.5mm jack for convenience and the assumption that the Dot's DAC is a bit better than the built-in BT. I started this mini-project because I hate the Echo's speakers (and the Dots were on sale for $35ea) so even background music from an Echo of any kind was out of the question. Hopefully Amazon develops the Echo's multiroom capabilities and I suspect that they will to get well ahead and stay ahead of Google. I do not want more Google microphones in my home.
