Uh, dude there is no reason to post the exact same question in multiple forums - one will do.

When it comes to receivers all of the top tier brands are similar at similar price points with minor trade-offs in features. You pick the one that meets your budget needs and has the features you require. I'd choose the Onkyo TX-SR605 over the Denon but that is because my experience is with Onkyo. One thing is for certain though, the Onkyo will be far easier to setup and use even though the Denon will offer pretty much the same features.

As for speakers you will get plenty of recommendations from others but they will definitely NOT be Bose.

Well the first thing would be to setup a budget... I mean honestly, what are you willing to spend on this? That will set the bar for this HT setup, so you can break down from there what you plan to do with it. Do you want a complete 5.1 or 7.1 surround right off the bat, or are you willing to invest more of the money on higher quality gear and make this a project that comes to fruition over say a year or two.

Some other things to help us help you might be listing some room details for this HT. Are you going to be using a dedicated HT room, or living room. What are the dimensions of it?

Also, I have to agree with MDS on this. Just post one thread on one forum, you're just going to irritate a lot of people by posting everywhere.

welcome aboard

Good to have you here.

I looked at your receiver list and they sound like solid options for a loq budget. But throw the notion of Bose right out the window. Bose is into the science of advertising and not the science of sound like they claim. They're stuff could be recommended if it were 100% cheaper but for what they ask, you can get alot more for your money. I suggest looking at Athena, Polk, Paradigm, PSB, Mirage, Energy, Mordaunt Short, Canton, Sinclair, etc. Lots of choices that are so much better than Bose.

Read some of the sticky or permananet posts on how to purchase speakers. I suggest taking some material, CDs and DVDs that you are very familair with along with a pad of paper and listen to as many speakers as you can. Right down what inpresses you about them abd what you don't like. Is the bass tight and fast or boomy and sloppy. Do the mids sound clear and life like or to male voices sound chesty and full of bass. DO the highs sound accurate and airy or accurate and grating? Do they image well? Do they throw out a big soundstage? Is teh ability to pick out instruments in the soundsateg important to you: if so can you hear the individual instruments relative to one another? These are some of the things to take notice. Let us know how you are progressing.

Anything except Bose.

Go listen to more speakers instead of surfing the net for other peoples opinions. Would you choose your soul-mate based solely on what others thought of her?

Once you've done that, you'll be on a better position to know what you want and don't want and more able to articulate your expectations.

Don't carpet bomb the forums with the same post on several forums. It's bad manners.

I would get the Onkyo 505. Both are practically identical: 7.1 Analog inputs, Surround decoders, but the Onkyo also has two HDMI 1.3 inputs (video switching only, no audio processing).

I would get the Polk speakers. Bose just sucks.
If you were to tell other audiophiles or audioholics that you proudly own Bose speakers, they will be forced to laugh behind your back (or maybe in your face).:D

So in your case, I would pick Onkyo & Polk.

Bookshelf speaker system

Check out the Onix X-series (AV123.com) and SVS 5.1 systems for $7-800. You will get much better audio performance than small satellite or cube speakers. AV123 also has a package that includes a better receiver than the models you list and a DVD player for $1k.

The Polk RM series is better than Bose, but still substandard when compared to the Onix and Def Tech suggestions you have gotten here.

One of those systems, combined with either one of the receivers you listed, will give you quite satisfactory performance.

BTW, if you like white, you can get the SVS SBS-01 system for $800 (normally $1000):

Not bad.

One Subwoofer: X-Sub for $199
Two Towers: X-sls for $239
One Center: X-cs for $129
Two Surrounds: X-ls for $165

Total: $732
Eh, I don't see a reason to spend the extra money on towers for L/R speakers.

He could save $150 by getting:

4 X-ls speakers, $165 x 2 = $330
1 X-sub for $199
1 X-cs center for $129

Total: $658

True. True. But for $150 I think it's worth getting the towers; they just look a lot cooler and probably sound a little better. If he's going with just bookshelf speakers + sub for $658, I would rather get the DefTech ProCinema 600 system for $640.

...... Why?
I guess just personal reasons.:D
1) Definitive Technology just seems to be a lot more famous than AV123. They are one of the most praised speaker names in the industry---and I mean praised by professional audio reviewers (Home Theater Magazine, Stereo Review, Sound & Vision, AV Revolution, etc.), not by advertisement.
2) I think Definitive also uses better materials.

If I didn't know anything at all about speakers--like a brand new hobby, I would pick speakers that are widely praised by professionals just to be safe.

But mainly personal reasons.
