I have this on vinyl and have always enjoyed it...I saw where it's available on SACD...has anybody heard this and is it a better production than a standard cd or the original 2 channel vinyl??

You know, I honestly have never listened to the 2-channel hirez to compare it to the most recently remastered redbook of this that was available.

But you do get it in multichannel hirez on the SACD. Eat a Peach is available as well, btw.

I never had the vinyl for this, but did have a few other versions, including the redbook CD. I picked this up a few weeks ago and can say without hesitation that its much better than any other media that I've heard it on. Solid mixing job and the separation of every instrument of every note is spectacular.

In the words of Ferris Bueller, "It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up..." -TD

p.s.
also just picked up Jeff Beck's "Blow By Blow" last night. In some brief listening, this is another excellent multichannel SACD recording...

expect Allman Bros in the mail soon from ebay(I did see them live a few years ago...one of the better "jam" comncerts I've ever been to)..Blow by Blow has always been one of my favorite 2 channel discs...perhaps will be my next sacd. Just picked up a spl meter so calibration time tonite to see if music/movies "sound" any better.

I've seen them 3 or 4 times. One concert back up in MA (at Great Woods Amphitheatre) about 10 years ago, my brother scored fourth row seats from the stage, those were probably the best seats I think I'll ever have for a concert.

The only downside to being that close was during one of their last few songs, Whipping Post, I believe, they blew a huge monitor right up front on the left corner of the stage. For the first 30 seconds of the song, it was slapping and cracking brutally, that was painful!!

They do put on an excellent show, though I think their age is catching up with them as of late. Gregg looked like he was takin' a nap on the keyboards during one song last time I saw them. Pretty soon you'll be able to call them Allman Brothers and Sons... :D

I'm not so sure you'll find using an SPL meter to calibrate your speakers will make it "sound" that much better, but it will even out the signals to give you a more balanced soundfield, which, I suppose could make it sound "better". I think you'll appreciate the consistency it provides. It may take a few movies or even a couple of days to become accustomed to the change, but I think you'll find it more appealing. If after a few days you feel like you'd rather have the center or some other channel slightly more prominent, you can always bump it up afterwards... -TD

Allman Brothers SACDs

I just picked up "Eat A Peach" in SACD, and it sounds great - well mixed, extremely clean and musical, all the things we've come to love about high definition audio... I just hope the industry isn't dying.. Hence, I've been investing in more products recently....

Oddly enough, I've been lucky in the past month or so to find a few at Best Buy. Other than that, I can typically find DVD-A and SACD titles at Buy.com, CD Universe and Tower Records to name a few. I got burned the first time I bought a couple of SACDs. I didn't realize they all aren't multichannel and picked up an Aerosmith's greatest hits SACD only to be highly disappointed to find only a stereo soundtrack... I suppose I'll just throw that one on the huge pile of 'life lessons'...

What esle besides "Live At Fillmore" did you get? Just curious...

I'll have to pick up Pink Floyd's DSOTM at some point as well. I'd much rather hear 'Wish You Were Here', but from all the feedback on DSOTM, it should be a good listen as well. I actually saw 'Eat A Peach' at Best Buy the other day, it took everything I could do not to run that one up to the counter... :D -TD

SACDs...

Actually, I've bought quite a few SACDs and DVD-As. I would rate the first 4 Elton John albums remixed in SACD quite highly - great mixing, incredibly clean sound, and great music, too. Before Elton turned into the brown dirt cowboy....

Also, YES - Fragile, the Doobie Brothers - The Captain and Me, Deep Purple - Machine Head, Fleetwood Mac - Rumors, Seal - Greatest Hits, and Toy Matinee all stand out as great DVD-A recordings. I have many more great albums reissued on DVD-A and SACD that all sound fantastic (so much cleaner and detailed than ever before), but those I've listed above are the ones I would instantly suggest possess a great surround mix...

Elton's Madman Across the Water was one of my Xmas scad's and very happy with it.....also have Norah Jones for a change of pace and Yes Fragile . DSOTM was my first and I never tire of it...best listened to at extreme volume...LOL!! Thinking of Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow and Elton's Yellow Brick Road next. I would like to pick up a few classical but not sure what to look for.....always have liked Mozart's 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik'...anybody suggest a good sacd for this?

DSOTM is definitely next on the list. I'll be getting Yes' Fragile at some point, I use to play that album over and over and over... I'd consider Machine Head, but there's not enough on that album to shell out that kind of cash for a few songs. Although I bet 'Space Truckin' would sound awesome in MC (multichannel).. :D

Maybe Rumors someday, but classic rock radio stations kinda put that album to a slow death over the years for me. In the same vain, I haven't broken down and bought Hotel California, though I did get their HFO DTS DVD. I've considered Seal's Greatest Hits, he's got a great voice and I'd probably like it, but I haven't listened to his stuff extensively. Maybe Elton's GYBR, I'll bet Funeral sounds awesome in MC, too. "brown dirt cowboy", now that's funny..

I picked up a 5.1 (not hi-res) dvd of Beethoven-Symphonies 7 8 9 with the SWR-Sinfonieorchester (orchestra of Baden-Baden and Freiburg, I think) which is in 4:3 video format, but it is an excellent recording of his 9th symphony, which I'm a huge fan of. I recently saw they have an SACD for the Amadeus soundtrack, which I'd grab in a heartbeat, but I don't think it's MC. Doesn't help that it's around $40, either...:( -TD

SACDs on yourmusic.com

yourmusic.com has about 60 SACDs...for $6 each!!

Search Title for " SACD" (for some odd reason, including the space in the search string turns up more matches.

The Mozart Requiem I got there is very nice. There's also Elton, Dylan, some jazz, and other stuff.

If you want to know what are good titles, you can look at audioasylum.com's forum "hi-rez highway" though it is tending to be more classical-centric of late...

I remember seeing them at the ampitheater in Raleigh back in had to be 94 or 95 and Greg showed up at the local blues bar the Berkeley after the concert. He sat in with the band and played Stormy Monday like I had never heard it before. Awesome. Had a ladyfriend over last night and turned her on to the Live at Great Woods dvd. I love to crank up the drum solo (if it still considered a solo with three drummers?). I remember another Allman Bros. concert where Greg played It's Not My Cross To Bear which instantly became one of my favorites.

Finally got the chance last night to listen to the Filmore East sacd at appropriate levels.....(nobody was home!). Very good mix. I know I'm enjoying the music when all the memories come back and I'm really hitting those "air drums" hard! This is a must have disc if you like live southern rock/blues!
