Just one point, the HT2 and the ribbon ST have the very same tweeter, made by LCY. The differences you hear may come from those magnesium woofers in the HT2. The crossover points in the two speakers are about the same frequency, but I'm pretty sure there are some differences in the shapes of their overall roll-off curves shape.
Thanks for clarifying. The confusion was on my part. I meant to say that the ribbon tweeter in both was the tweeter upgrade for the base Songtower but maybe it didn't come out sounding that way. The real benefit of the HT2 has to be in the woofer that provides that warm, smooth, open midrange.

Hi Dave,

Would you put the Fritz Speakers in the same category as Salk Audio?

Hi Dave,

Would you put the Fritz Speakers in the same category as Salk Audio?
I'm not sure that I could go that far based on the minimal experience I've had with either. For one thing, Salk's display was set up in a room the size of a ballroom and sounded great despite the size of the room. Plus, all the Salk's were run from really expensive high end gear. On the other hand, Fritz' speakers were set up in a tiny, cramped hotel room and driven by, literally a bargain basement appliance store receiver. Yet Fritz' speakers still managed to sound good and despite the awkward setup of the hotel rooms that had most of the exhibitors set up the wrong way, Fritz was one of the few speakers that actually presented some imaging. Even the Dynaudio displays couldn't really present any decent imaging or soundstage in those terrible rooms, but Fritz did.

The value proposition is something yet to be decided. There was a range of speakers from ~$600 to $1700. Before I dropped that kind of coin on a set of speakers, I would want a more substantial audition. At that price, we're well into B&W and Dynaudio range. Fritz' cabinets looked pretty nice from what I could see but nowhere near the high end furniture quality of Salk's.

I wanted to give a shout out to Fritz primarily because I think there may be some potential there worthy of looking into further. I didn't get the chance to ask him about cabinet construction or other details that might set his speakers apart from others in that range. But I like his lack of pretentiousness and his cajones for displaying his speakers with such commonplace bargain basement equipment (and still trust that they would sound good).

I can't even imagine what that must have been like. $14,000 worth of speakers with more $$$$ in amps ?!?
I just wanted to say thanks for the pic's and impressions.

I got to hear some pretty nice Def Techs and I wasn't right for a week. :D

You should have heard the Snell Phantoms. $20K worth of speakers with another $14K worth of McIntosh amp and music server. I don't think you'd ever be right again after hearing that setup (not that I think your exactly "right" to begin with).

I just realized I included the wrong link to the Snell Phantoms in my previous post. Here is the real pic.

They are a seriously awesome speaker with a seriously awesome pricetag to boot. You can just see the McIntosh gear to the right edge of the photo.

So what did they play on the $34,000 set up?
I think that at that point it needs to sound better than live.

I don't remember exactly what music they played but whatever it was gave me a serious case of speaker lust. These were tight, detailed, powerful, solid...everything I like in a speaker. I really wish that they were in a larger room to give them room to sing. You can see the size of the room from the coffee table edge at the bottom of the pic. It was almost near-field listening due to the size of the room but the awesomeness was obvious.
