Maybe someone could help me with this. I'm really really concerned with our obvious border issue to the South the possible security issues we might face from the rearrangement of that side of the world after the Taliban takeover

I'm worried with China Russia and the Taliban back in power we may have a very serious security situation on our borders

And I don't trust the Taliban one bit in leaving us alone know that they are back in power

I'm researching but maybe someone with some experience in these issues could help me out a bit?

The U.S. might step in to defend Taiwan, but the official U.S. position is "strategic ambiguity" which is of course ambiguous. Perhaps Biden inadvertently blurted out the truth, but it's hard to say. Which reminds me of the old joke: The definition of a gaffe is when a politician accidentally tells the truth.

>>>WASHINGTON, Aug 19 (Reuters) - A senior Biden administration official said on Thursday that U.S. policy on Taiwan had not changed after President Joe Biden appeared to suggest the United States would defend the island if it were attacked, a deviation from a long-held U.S. position of "strategic ambiguity." . . .
"We have made - kept every commitment. We made a sacred commitment to Article 5 that if in fact anyone were to invade or take action against our NATO allies, we would respond. Same with Japan, same with South Korea, same with - Taiwan. It's not even comparable to talk about that."

A senior Biden administration official said U.S. "policy with regard to Taiwan has not changed" and analysts said it appeared that Biden had misspoken. . . Bonnie Glaser, a Taiwan expert at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, called Biden's apparent mischaracterization "unfortunate." "The U.S. had an Article 5 commitment to Taiwan from 1954 to 1979. The Biden administration isn't considering returning to that commitment, as indicated by public statements by Kurt Campbell." . . .
Biden's national security adviser Jake Sullivan was asked about Taiwan this week and called it a "fundamentally different question in a different context" to Afghanistan.

"We believe our commitment to Taiwan ... remains as strong as it's ever been," he said, without specifying what the commitment was.<<<

I'm sorry and it's quite late but in the words of a somewhat famous Australian rock band - "Moneytalks"

Stepping into a political pissing match (i.e. this thread) is risky business, but it is clearly true that China has been acting very aggressive towards Taiwan lately. Can't we all just get along, and start pissing on China? (Yeah, I know, I obviously do not have a future in stand up comedy)

>>>BEIJING/TAIPEI, Aug 17 (Reuters) - China carried out assault drills near Taiwan on Tuesday, with warships and fighter jets exercising off the southwest and southeast of the island in what the country's armed forces said was a response to "external interference" and "provocations". . . A senior official familiar with Taiwan's security planning told Reuters that China's air force had carried out a "capturing air supremacy" drill, using their advanced J-16 fighters.

"In addition to seeking air supremacy over Taiwan, they have also been conducting frequent electronic reconnaissance and electronic interference operations," the person said.

Taiwan believes China is trying to gather electronic signals from U.S. and Japanese aircraft so that they can "paralyse reinforcing aircraft including F-35s in a war", the source said, referring to the U.S.-operated stealth fighter.<<<

>>>Wonder Where World War III Might Break Out? Try Taiwan

The hard problem is how long and at what cost is the U.S. willing to stand between Taiwan and mainland China’s aggression. . . .

A clear and troubling consensus has emerged in the American national security community that the Taiwan Strait is the most likely place for a major war to erupt between the United States and China; that it might start soon, and that such a conflict might quickly escalate into a nuclear confrontation.<<<

For those who prefer a view from the right:

>>>A Chinese Attack on Taiwan Is Getting Closer . . .

U.S. defense planners warn that Beijing is softening the ground for an assault — one that might come in the not-so-distant future.

At two separate Senate hearings last month, the current head of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and the nominee to replace him warned of a growing threat of a Chinese attack. It could come “in the next decade, in fact within the next six years,” said Admiral Phil Davidson. His would-be successor, Admiral John Aquilino, a few weeks later offered a similar assessment: “There are spans from today to 2045. My opinion is this problem is much closer to us than most think.” . . . The modernization drive [of the military in China] has been so successful that in Pentagon war games, the U.S. consistently loses to China in hypothetical conflicts over Taiwan. <<<

This is an excellent point you bring up I too have been digging a lot into what could happen if China goes after Taiwan. And I've seen those same reports about how the Pentagon once they run the games are pretty sobered up about what would happen if we go to war with China over Taiwan.

A lot of its just simple logistics Taiwan is right by China we have to get down there and fight them on theyre home turf. China's military improvements have made just getting down there a formidable task. Let alone holding Taiwan from the Chinese.

Man that's a nasty situation

Another perspective on the China question.

I'm not saying that they don't pose a threat. When a regime is feeling weak and vulnerable, they sometimes lash out externally in order to shore up support internally. That was a prime factor prompting the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands.

It's a loss for G.O.P. that the party is no longer a home for conservatives like David Frum.

While he has had his share of missteps over the years, he generally acknowledges them. For example, he supported the invasion of Iraq, but has come to regret that. In the end, he wasn't sufficiently conservative for the evolving radicalization of the GOP.

What has the world come to when we say to neocons: "It's all forgiven! Come back!" :D

Krugman during the Trump "Porn Star" Presidency wrote that the neocons had principles after all (a moral spine) and that cost them dearly as Never Trumpers.

a little more saber rattling ...............

And more saber rattling (editorial comment: PLA ("People's Liberation Army") may be the most wildly misnamed organization in human history)

The various problems China is facing right now do not seem to be deterring their aggression against Taiwan. I find myself wondering if it is actually driving the aggression to some degree (e.g. strike now before domestic problems get worse).

>>>China flew an unprecedented 52 warplanes into Taiwanese airspace on Monday, Taiwan's Ministry of Defense reported, marking a troubling escalation as Beijing boasts of sending record numbers of attack aircraft at a time of heightened tensions.<<<

It's SOP for totalitarian governments to distract public attention from domestic problems. Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands in 1982 is a classic example. Let's hope China doesn't go down that path.

Reading that USNews it indicates they flew "near" Taiwanese airspace, not into it like the old USSR recon planes flying near our airspace.

I see this whole thing as a China looking to push Biden's buttons to see how much spunk Biden has. I think they call this 'Saber Rattling"
