Affordable Receiver with OSD overlay out of HDMI

HI,
I'm looking for a receiver that overlays the OSD out of the HDMI-Out. So for example I want to see how much I change the volume on the screen when I do... The receiver will be in the basement and the TV is upstairs, so this is obviously an important feature.
Further, I need 4 HDMI-INs, right now I need 3 but eventually I got to get a blu-ray. Also 2nd zone capabilities.

Now I know that there are receivers that do all that (Denon 3808, I think the Onkyo 876), but they all cost around 1k. I would really like to keep it under that if possible.

Any thoughts? I looked at a lot of different receivers, so I thought I ask, since I might have missed something....

Thanks a lot!

Denon 3808. Best GUI on the market and will overlay 1080p via HDMI.

*edit- I just saw that you had already listed this and it may be out of your price range. I searched high and low for an AVR with this type of GUI and ability to overlay the volume display. The 3808 is the only thing I could find that was to my liking. The SC series Elites may do it but they were not available when I got my AVR. I would have gotten the Denon over the Elite secondary to the Audessy on the Denon anyway.

Have you checked out the specs on the new pre/pro Emotiva unit (UMC-1)?

I can't post links yet (newby).
emotiva * com / umc1 * shtm

"Currently in production - release date TBA. $699"
"Full color graphical OSD over live video, including HDMI"
"5 - HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output"

You could probably get a pre/pro with GUI and amp (depending on amps and channels) for less than some receivers.

You have to be willing to wait 1-2 months (or more) for the UMC-1.

You know it always helps to look around for deals.

accessories4less sells 876s for far less than 1k.:)

Hey,
thanks for all the replies. I really would like to get the Denon 3808, I don't know if i can shore up the money though. The Pioneer Elite receivers only do the overlay if you have a Pioneer display as well. The Emotiva would be really nice, but 699 plus amp will be well over the 1k I would have to get together for the Denon. Now the Onkyo 876, are you sure it does osd overlay?

If the Onk will do what you want and is cheaper, go for it.

If Emo ever comes out with anything, I would still pass on it but that's just me.

I just read on avsforum that the Onkyo won't do the overlay when it puts out 1080p/24p I guess the 24p is the important part here. I have no idea what that means. What sources are put out in 1080p/24p? I'm planning on hooking up: a mac mini, xbox360, and later on a blu-ray player. Do any of these use this? Thanks!

Yes, bluray outputs at 24p. Hopefully your display supports 24p, in a proper cadence like 120hz, 96, 72, 48, etc.

I have a question about volume control overlaid on display for those who know. Just curious:

How easy is it to disable/enable this feature? IOW, gimme your guess on how many buttons you have to click to do so (if this feature is indeed defeatable).

Thank you. :)
