affordable optical cables

can someone suggest where to get some reasonable priced opitical cables? circuit city seems a bit overpriced.

Yeah, monoprice is a great place to buy cables -- not just cheap but good quality too. I just bought a bunch of cables from them. Build quality is better from the AR cables I bought from BB. I mentioned that I heard about them on the internet when I ordered. Hopefully, that was good for the sponsored sites.

What makes an optical cable good or bad? Is there really a bad optical cable? I mean, it doesnt have to be shielded...

I guess if light poured out the side it wouldnt be so good.

The biggest difference I have seen in cable quality would be the flexibility.

The cheap ones you are afraid they will snap if you bend them while the better ones are a little more flexi.

Quality of the transmission, I guess. You know, total amount of light transmitted. Probably has a lot to do with the reflectivity of the fiber itself. I don't know an awful lot about fiber optics other than using them all the time in both audio and data transmission.

In any case, the Monoprice optical cables are definitely good to at least 50 feet (I use a few of that length). They have a very thick, durable casing, good connectors, and I haven't been able to break one yet.

You can spend a few more bucks and get their Metallic Body optical cables, which look every bit as snazzy as Monster cable

The difference between cheap and expensive is usually whether it is a glass or plastic fiber. With a well polished end, it shouldn't make a considerable difference though.
