Advice Re Adding a Plate Amp to Passive Sub

In 1995 I purchased a complete THX set of speakers from Boston Acoustics (along with the commonly used Kenwood pre-amp and power amp). The ensemble came with two passive subwoofers with 12" drivers in a sealed box (acoustic suspension?). I believe their model number is 595x, and they are large and heavy. Powering them has aways been tricky as the Kenwood Amp only has one 100W channel to power both. Given how inexpensive Sub Plate Amps are now, I'm wondering if should cut an opening in the back of each sub and give each its own amplifier? Any opinions or help or guidance on doing this would be much appreciated.

I have a pair of passive B&W PCS8 THX ported subs, but run by a Parasound HCA1200mk2 THX amp at 200wpc. Rather than bore a hole in your subs (the amp would consume internal volume too), why not just build a box around each of the plate amps. That way you can more easilly access, adjust, and position them while keeping the originality of the subs.

You don't necessarily need a plate amp. If you are feeding an already crossed over signal from a receiver for example, you can use any amp. I wouldn't crack these open since they are sealed, and as mentioned, you will lose internal volume.
