Advice on mounting a CD player vertically

I have a Clairtone G2 (http://digabyte.com/e-fray/g2/) that had "upgraded" components (vintage Phillips Turntable, Marantz 2235 tuner/amp) when I purchased it. While the tuner is a great piece of equipment, it protrudes from the bottom of the stereo, and ruins the sight lines of the design (and unfortunately the previous owner cut through the bottom of the cabinet to accomodate the tuner).

I've been looking for original components for about 6 years, to no avail.

I started looking for tuners/amps with a smaller footprint that might better fit into the stereo cabinet (about 9" deep), but haven't found anything to really light my fire.

Also, since the components aren't original anyway, I'd like to mount a CD player in the cabinet, but I'm not sure how to make that work, as the CD player would need to be mounted vertically. I've thought about using a slot loading PC CD player, but that seems like a lot of hardwiring components and mounting. I've also considered placing a nice (shallow) amp in the cabinet, and then hooking up a decent car stereo with an 1/8" input for the iPod and a slot loader that would play CD's and MP3 CD's (I assume most car stereos can be mounted vertically, like in the center console, without issue --please advise if I am wrong).

So... anybody got any suggestions as to either a vertically mounted component CD player, or a good car stereo to use for my home stereo system?

Thanks!
