Advice for a Subwoofer Please

Hi!

I currently have:

a new Onyko TX-NR616 (replaced a failing Sony STR-DE945)

2 Sony STR -DE945 front speakers

1 Center Polk Audio 5jr 12017 speaker

2 Side Sony SS-SR490 speakers

2 rear (don't laugh) Cambridge Soundworks FPS 2000 speakers

I was looking at the Polk Audio PSW10 until I read some of the reviews here. Any suggestions? My front speakers have great bass response when they are the only two used, but when using surround sound the bottom end disappears.

Thanks!

You need to tell people your budget. It does no good to recommend a $2000 subwoofer to someone who cannot afford it, but it might be exactly the right thing to recommend to someone who can.

I recommend that you buy an SVS, the best one you can afford. They start at about $500. If you don't have that much, I recommend saving your money until you do, and then buy an SVS when you can afford it.

Sorry about that. Thank you for the suggestion Pyrrho.

I was hoping to spend around $200. I will look at SVS right now though. Anyone else feel free to chime in too!

Hi RunTheFromYeti, welcome to the forum!

Here's a sub that gets good reviews and is a real bargain. EMP Tek ES10i Subwoofer and it's right at your budget.

I have EMP speakers and I'm very happy with them.

Don't listen to these guys they are audio snobs, jk, lol..:D WELCOME TO THE FORUM...

While the svs is a great sub for $500, I understand if "saving up" isn't an option, sometimes people just don't want or "need" a $500 sub, lol.... Obviously this is a strict budget system, and there is nothing wrong with that, its a lot better than listening to tv speakers...

You can get some decent subs for $200...

Amazon.com: BIC America F12 12-Inch 475-Watt Front Firing Powered Subwoofer: Electronics
Amazon.com: JBL ES250PBK High-Performance 12-Inch Powered Subwoofer: Electronics
the polk 505 can be bought on sale for $199 once and a while, there are a few others out there too, someone else already mentioned the parts express stuff, there are a lot of options, its not like you are asking where to find a $2000 new car, $200 subs exist and will satisfy most consumers, some of us on this board are bass redonkulous and just never get enough because our worn out dead bodies can't "feel" anymore...

I have heard the bic and it will do the ht job, the jbl is a good looking unit, if you get one of them please let us know what you think,,, the dayton is a great value, 15" for that price is hard to beat..

A 15" Dayton 200 dollar sub is great for the average person. Though the 500 dollar SVS is amazing.

The JBL ES250 is decent for a budget sub. I would probably go with the dayton sub1500 for 200.00.

It is an unwise use of money to buy something that does not satisfy, which one later feels the need to replace with something better. Such things are called a "false economy," because they save money up front, but in the long run cost people more. One should buy a sub less good than an SVS only if one never wants one as good as an SVS. Otherwise, much of the money spent on the lesser one will end up being wasted funds.

Many people waste a lot of money with little upgrades, when if they had saved their money, they would either have a better system in the end for the same outlay of money, or will have had the ending system with less money spent. So, one should think very carefully about what one really wants, and about how good it needs to be to be good enough to not need replacing later on.

The irony of this is that the people who most do this are typically people who can least afford it. If one is rich, it does not matter if one wastes money, but if one is rich, one can easily buy something great from the start. If one is relatively poor, one should be careful about managing one's funds to get the best that one can from those limited funds, instead of squandering them. Obviously, each person must decide for himself or herself what is good enough and so forth, but most people tend to regret their choices and keep coming back for advice regarding an upgrade. If they had just saved their money from the start, they would sooner have good gear, and may have better gear than they would otherwise be able to afford.

So, by advising people to save up for an SVS, I am trying to save them some money and some regrets. They are free to accept or reject the advice, as they please.

Pyrrho, there is another side of this coin.
Long time ago I advised my boss who asked for really cheap 5.1 to get tSc 5.1 flat speakers + 10" sub - TSAT Something (bigger ones on front and smaller one in surround duty)
To this day he thinks it sounds good and have no plans of changing them, I have not heard them but I doubt they are that good...

I am still happy with my tSc speaker - which are much bigger than his. Each to their own if set expectations right and not have very demanding ear.
OP already has very budget system and getting SVS sub will be nice, it would like putting a vet engine in 20 year old mazda
