Advice appreciated!

Hi!

Newbie here bombing away with a question or two?

I have(had) a Yamaha HTR 5990 I've owned a couple yrs and recently lightning decided to fry the HDMI capability.

Am trying to decide whether to repair it or replace with a new unit. Of course Yammy doesn't have this unit anymore. I'd like to repair but haven't been able to get an estimate yet.

Has anyone ever had HDMI repaired? Expensive?

Is there a comparable unit available? Seems I paid around $800 new; it's rated around 130-140wpc. from what i remember.

I'm going to go ahead and say get a new unit. I bet that "HDMI" replacement is not going to be cheap, and that's assuming it's the only thing that was damaged. Typically, the most expensive part of electronics repair is the diagnosis, but motherboards, HDMI stuff, is usually pretty expensive as well, and in my very limited experiences, when the stuff is no longer current, these parts are actually even more* expensive. YMMV.

So, I say swallow the pill, get a new unit.

I second recycling that unit. When you get your new unit, get a smart UPS battery backup with 1 to 2 sec response time.

hey thanks for the info! Seems with the age of the unit, buying new would be a good idea.

I may just put it in the basement area to power some speakers I have down there. The tuner still works for sure.

Like I said earlier, my Yammy's HDMI's are toast, but I can't help but wonder if I can use it as a power source?

I'd been researching new receivers and found a good price on a Denon 2310ci. The knock on it from what I read is that it has no pre-outs? This means I can't hook up more power to it, right?

Well my Yammy has about 130wpc and if I want to access that power I'm thinking I may have to find a unit that has preouts. Anyone know if I could actually use the Yamaha for its power only?

You should be able to if you have something like "mch inputs". However, why bother really? (unless you're getting a dedicated pre/pro, and not a receiver).

I used to think pre-outs are a must no matter what. Now I think it really doesn't matter for entry to mid range models because if I am serious enough to add an external amp I would want to pair it with an upper mid range model at the minimum.

It was just my opinion. I also consider your 6190 upper mid range but not the 2310. Compare the specs you will know what I mean.
