adding an amplifier

I have 4 pairs of speakers running through a speaker selector box that connects to "A" in the back of the receiver (Sony STR-DE597). The speaker selector box is Radio Shack (cheap, I assume) and will not play all speakers at once if all 4 speakers are "engaged". Is there enough power with my receiver or can I possibly add and amp to my current receiver?

What do you mean it will not play all speakers? No sound? The controller will not select all? Amp going into protection?

What hind of speakers are we talking about, specifically its impedance and sensitivity. Are the speakers on one channel of that Sony?
