TLS...whats a vertically cut record and how does this differ from what we are used to seeing?
There hardly are any vertically cut discs and I've never encountered one.
The first attempt at a stereo disc was pre war, (Blumlein) was to have two spaced grooves with two styli and cartridges. That obviously halved playing time a and was a contraption.
After the war attempts were made to add a vertical cut (just like Edison's "hill and dale" cylinders), to the horizontal cut. (Berliner)
Two problems just like Edison encountered.
1). Limited dynamic range of the vertical Hill and dale cut plus noise.
2). Inability to get adequate compliance in cutters and playback cartridges for the vertical cut.
Then someone got the brilliant idea to turn the combined Horizontal cut (Berliner) and the vertical cut (Edison) through 45 degrees and the stereo LP as we know it was born.
So the ability to play a vertical cut is not very useful.
