A sub to go with my Usher S-520 bookshelf speakers?

Building a home theater and need your advice.

A few months ago I purchased 3 Usher S-520's bookshelf speakers, used. They act as the left/right/center.

I have no rear channel speakers, but could use a couple small JVC bookshelf speakers until I purchase something else down the line. My receiver is a HK254.

The dimensions of the room are roughly 10'd x 15'w x 8'h. Listening to music about 40%, movies/tv 60%.

I don't want to spend more than $500. I would love a compact sub, but don't want to sacrifice sound quality.

Should I be concerned about a particular sub matching the Usher speakers? I've read about the HSU's and SVS's, but have never heard either one. Other subs to look at?

Thanks for your help!

HSU has the STF-3 on clearance at $480. You can also find some of the last year model Velodyne SLR models for around your price range if you need to go really small. Also the Outlaw LFM-1 compact is available for $399.

I'd grab a nice pair of Dayton 12" or 10"s if you want smaller. Your room is smaller than mine and the Dayton 10" fills mine with plenty of bass.

But go with the 12s and use them as stands for the Ushers.:)

I'll throw the Aperion 8D into the mix. It has about the same output as the HSU STF-2, but doesn't hit as low. I felt the 8D had a slight edge in SQ. The 8D is really small, $499 shipped, and its finish would match the 520's.
