They look too appliance like to me. It reminds me of something you see in those old movies that pretend to look into the future. I wonder how they sound?

You don't ever lump hippie and disco together they are two completely different enities!:)
there are millions of hippies that turned disco. mid 70's is when that happened.

I have heard speakers from this company in a similar style by larger and somewhat weirder looking. I only heard them playing classical music which is not my strongest genre but they sound quite good. They seemed very detailed and imaged really well. I do recall that they are very expensive, like tens of thousands, partly due to their carbon fiber construction.

They are really different, I must say. They just want to look unique from the sharp edged speakers we have.

The non parallel cabinet shape and lack of sharp edges is one tried and true method for averting cabinet reflection and resonance, this behavior has been around in B&Ws for years. The designs of these speakers would seem indicate that he had heavy influence in some of B&W's higher end offerings from the past 2 decades, which makes perfect sense because he used to be an engineer for B&W according the the article.

What?

Seth nailed it, this isn't a fancy design to look cool, it's performance oriented.

There's no question that it provides better performance (if well implemented), but the cost of producing such cabinet is much higher than your plain rectangular MDF cabinet... Which brings us back to, is the performance improvement really is worth the cost?

The Vivid B1 (3 way) costs 13500$. That's not cheap... Ah but it's not a 3 way.. 3.5, with some rear driver.
