A question for Doobie Brothers fans

Does anyone have The Very Best of the Doobie Brothers on cd? I wonder if you've had the same experience I have.

I just paid a bit more than I wanted to Amazon to get this remastered clutch of great songs. What a huge disappointment! I don't think there is any signal below 200 Hz during the first 13 cuts. What was the re-mastering engineer thinking?! It's all top end and really, really edgy. Even played on my easy listening Aerial 7B's, the high end is like ice picks to the ears...all the while with remarkably missing bass. Beginning with the 14th cut on the first cd, bass seems to have been returned to the mix. But the cutting edginess was still abundant.

Is this just a bad cd? A bad re-master? I really enjoy the Doobies, but I will likely never listen to this cd again. What a waste of 27 bucks.

I think you would like the original CDs of "The Captain and Me" and "Touluse Street" from the Doobie Brothers, if you like the original rockers. I have older copies and they are recorded well. I don't know if they have been remastered for current sales, but you can give the CDs a listen from the local library for free.

RJ, I agree; it's like it was recorded from an FM radio.

A suggestion would be to check if the legendary Steve Hoffman has reissued that CD in his version of a Gold Re-master.
I know he did 'Minute By Minute'
Here's a link to what's out now: http://www.audiofidelity.net/pc-24k.html
I know it's not a great solution, since you've already spent $$ on the CD you have.:(

Hmmm, that's a bummer, I've never heard that CD but I do own the Michael McDonald Ultimate Collection, which has all of his hits with the Doobies too and it sounds good.

FYI, Toulouse Street was recently released on SACD by Mobile Fidelity. If it's anything like their other SACDs, that is the one to add to your collection. The Captain and Me and Takin' It To The Streets are in the pipeline and due out sometime in the future (no release date on the web site). Here's the link:

DCC also released a gold CD of the Best of the Doobies, but it is long out of print and hard to find. Since Audio Fidelity Appears to be a revived DCC, maybe they will re-release that title in the future.

I was going to make a joke about how you should have stuck with vinyl because I like talkin' out my a$$ but ...

What a waste of 27 bucks.
... this is no laughing matter. For a CD ?!? Dave told me you had coffee cans full of money buried in your yard. Now I believe him. :)

Let me rub a little salt in that for you. Yesterday I picked up 21 different recordings on vinyl for $40 including 'the best of' of Neil Diamond, ZZ Top and Eagles.

Alright, here's the killing blow: I also got a copy of this:

Sealed ...

... for a buck!

Sorry for the threadjack but it's 4:30 AM, I can't sleep and I have nothing else to do. When I go back there today I think I'll maybe check out what they have in the Doobie Brothers section. I don't have anything by them ... yet. :)

Well, aren't we the smart shopper, then?! :p

Yeah, this is more than I think I've ever paid for a cd or vinyl. It was going to be my demo CD for the GTG in October. Not now. :(

When I went back to the record store I saw that The Doobie Brothers put out 2 'best of' type albums. I passed on them due to the fact that I just spent $40 on Friday and the $4 price tags were gonna push me over the limit with whatever else I was buying but I did pick up a couple of Outlaw albums and I know this may sound crazy but The Bee Gees Main Course has an album side that is pretty awesome. It's the first time my g/f has ever turned the music up. Yeah, yeah, yeah ... I know ... but the songs are enormously popular hits. Either that or some Tom Jones. :D

My wife loves the "Best Of" and compilation type CD's. Some of them are simply terrible quality. When I want to pick up a classic disc, I go to the used CD shop and try to find one recorded back in the 80's or 90's. If you really want a "Best Of" album, still try to find an older used copy.

I just purchased a copy of the Captain and Me DVD-A with multichannel and 2 channel mixes. Both sound great but the multichanel mix is outstanding.

Like Chicago (another great 60's/70's band), their best work was their earliest IMO.
