A little help please

Ok, I'm new here. I don't live in the States but I'm on my way pretty soon on vacation and shopping.

I want to buy speakers and a A/V receiver to use in my bedroom. I already have a Sony 40" LCD and a PS3. My bedroom is not that big and I'm on a tight budget, so I was planning to buy the BOSE Acousticmass 6 Series III and the ONKYO TX-SR 307. Those two things plus the ceiling brackets for the speakers will run for about a thousand dollars.

Now here's the problem: I've been reading all about speakers and receivers online and I found your website. Of course, I already read the TEN BIGGEST MISTAKES article, and I'm specially concerned about mistake number 4 "the attractive little cubes...", not to mention that I know that Onkyo receivers have that issue with the HDMI signal only for video, etc.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

I already checked the Onkyo HT-S5200 Home Theater System. Really cheap!, but those speakers are kinda bulky... keep in mind this is for a bedroom.

I would suggest staying away from Bose, and everyone else will say the same as well. My personal recommendation for small unobtrusive speakers is the Klipsch Quintet series. I have the Quintet SL's and I get a lot of enjoyment out of them.

And I think it's funny that there's a bose ad on the top of this site lol

The Quintets (especially the SL but they out of your budget) are what I usually recommend for small satellites, but small satellites are never my 1st choice. They will require a subwoofer and you will have to crossover to the sub at a higher frequency than I like ~120-150hz. Also the Klipsch sound is a love it or hate it thing. I happen to like them.

For those less interested in appearance several of us have been recommending using Behringer B2030P bookshelf sized studio monitors with a decent subwoofer. You can pick them up for $130/pr and cross them over to the sub at 80hz. They aren't pretty but sound pretty darn good right out of the box. There is also a mod that someone here developed that improves them even more. So 3pr = $390 shipped. A refurbished Onkyo TX-SR607 from Accessories For Less for $330 plus shipping. I assume you're from a country that uses 120v. That leaves $280 (minus shipping) for a subwoofer. I'd go for a Hsu STF-2 but that takes you over budget. If something had to give to stay on budget I'd get by with 2 pair of the Behringers for a 3.1 system (plus a spare speaker) that really rocks.

All of these prices are based on having things shipped. Can you have them shipped to a friend here? You're probably going to have to budget for duties to get them home.

Here's a third option. The discontinued Energy Take 5.1 Classic RC Micro system. Again they cross over higher than I like. And they will likely run out of steam quickly in a big room but they should be fine for a bedroom. If you shop sales you can often find the satellites for around $200 and the matching sub for around $200. They won't rock with the Behringer/Hsu setup I suggested but they will look and sound good.

Don't forget Orb Audio which you can get shipped to you while in the U.S. Another option for speakers are the Mirage Nanosats sold all over the net and at local Best Buy stores. Combine either of these with a sub from HSU and you have a great little system.
