I know these are not SVS, def-tec, HSU, but are these pretty decent alternatives: JBL ES Series ES250PBK (I can get 2 for $500), Infinity PS 210 and 212.

Save you money and get a b-stock SVS or Hsu. If you want a very good inexpensive alternative , consider the Dayton SUB-120 HT for $155.23 from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Dayton-SUB-120-Watt-Powered-Subwoofer/dp/B000C9NV78 You don't say how large the room is, if large multiple of the Dayton sub. This would me a better choice IMHO than the JBL or Infinity subs you mentioned.

Good Luck!

P.S. - I used to code professionally ;)

I would stick with Internet direct companies. Elimental Designs, Hsu, or SVS and let them size a sub for you.

Do you go to the dentist for a broken leg? Subwoofers are a specialty. On top of that you usually get more bang for the buck eliminating the middleman.

I think you got the analogy backwards. You could go the the hospital for many health reasons, but you see a specialist when you want your specific problem handled the best. JBL and Infinity make decent and even great products. In general they are not known for their subwoofers. SVS, HSU, and Elemental Designs are subwoofer specialists and have garnered a lot of respect for the value they provide. Those JBL and Infinity subs are a fart next to these internet direct brands. Velodyne would be one possible alternative, but they often don't offer the same value for their subwoofers.

Thanks guys; Well put.

Got 2 of these on the way

$329 shipped
I just love then people come by, ask for advice, listen and thank for it, and then turn 180 and do the opposite

p.s: Nothing per-se is wrong with BIC america speakers or their subs. They are very budget friendly and decent bang-for-a-buck, but their subs
fart next to these internet direct brands.
as Seth nicely put it.

Are u guys bashing me because I didn't get a svs, HSU? I thanked them because they gave me insight on the products I asked about; the "thanks" was not a confirmation that I was going to buy the subs that were mentioned. It was clear in me post that I was looking for an alternative to those popular brands, so how did I go 180 opposite? I really don't get the point of those replies. I bought a pioneer elite based on shollings comments about the elite line. I decided on 2 subs because of was recommend here. I think in the end I will have built a TERRIFIC system with the help of this site. Special cudos go out to Seth and Sholling:)

you arent getting bashed, but its funny you did do exactly the opposite of the advice that was given.. BIC is a speaker manufacture along the same lines of what you were originally asking about and in the end .. inspite of the advice given for much better and similar price alternatives you bought exactly what was told to avoid.

Well I didn't know they were along the same lines as the ones that were not advised. After reading on other sites I thought they were Internet based only. In this particular thread, I never asked for subwoofer recommendations, so why am I being critisized? if I asked for recommendations, then I could see your point, but I didn't. If you read Seth's post, he was referring to the brands that I clearly was looking for an alternative for.

you requested alternatives for a SUB .. isnt that asking about a subwoofer?

and for someone concerned enough to write a post on here asking for sugestions why wouldnt you mention the bic prior to making the purchase.. its just funny. it will probably sound pretty good.. but the suggested subs proabbly would be better.. , its ok its your money and I guess you just wont know for sure now.

However, you didn't ask anyone about the BIC subs, for all your knew they could have been total crap. Most people aren't familiar with BICs products, and there's no reason for us to assume that you know anything about them either. I think they are most annoyed that you made a decision based on no feedback you received from anyone here. You may well be receiving insight from someone else, but we don't see that. You can understand our confusion and frustration.

Look at it this way. If you asked someone whether you should buy a Camero or a Mustang. Let's assume you received a lot of positive information pointing your toward the Camero because it fit your ideal of a modern muscle car. Then you came back with a Dodge Charger, a car that was never mentioned or discussed and you seemingly purchased on a whim without knowing a lick about the vehicle. Yeah, sure, it's a nice car, but how did you know it was a good car? We didn't tell you it was, you didn't ask.

Does that make sense?

I totally understand your point Seth, but I never asked whether I should buy this sub or that sub. I made it clear that I was looking for an alternative. The title of the thread states this. The two repliers are saying, since I didn't get svs , hsu, a200, I did something wrong. Chris, show me where I asked for an alternative. I clearly asked for feedback on the subs I stated. If someone chooses not to give feeback on the subs and suggest svs, hsu, etc. Then they have a right to do that. But keep in mind, I never asked whether to but svs or JBL. After I read about BIC, I didn't post about them because I know what would have happens; posters saying buy svs instead. I could have bought them and didn't post at all, but out of respect for Seth and Sholling, (and others) for helping me so much I post what I bought.

Fact is, they subs are on the way and I will post what I think of he subs. Again, thanks Seth and Sholling.

"A little feedback on these sub alternatives"

sorry if we missunderstood the intent of the post, but I think we all here misunderstood what you were asking.. and also for the record the daytons were also recomended along with a few other brands so nobody is pushing SVS down your throat.. rather suggest companies that excel in this catagory and are very affordable.

the reason for posting such questions on forums like this is to take advantage of others experience and save yourself some time and money :)

enjoy your purchase though

And I gave a specific list of subs that I asked for feedback on. In this thread, I never inquired about any other sub than the list I provided.

I don't know how much more specific that I could have been then that

No harm no foul chris; I like this site.

PS I do see your point about Sholling recommending to go with internet based companies. To Sholling: I thought BIC was internet based only. I guess I was wrong. Don't hold it against me:)
