hi all,

well this isn't exactly the place to post this. since it is not relevant to media centers but hey what the heck - here goes. I recently ordered some components for a brand new data server at my work where the budget is always a concern :D its a non-profit organization. and yes i am the only poor one running the IT show..

Motherboard: ECS A880LM-A3 ($60 shipped)
CPU: Phenom II X2 555 BE ($80 shipped) - All cores unlocked 100%
Memory: Kingston ValueRAM 8 GB ($99 shipped)
Hard Drives: 4 x Seagate LP 2 TB with software Raid 5 ($249.99)

Graphics is onboard and running Ubuntu for server with mdam as software raid 5. Total cost $480  Running 3 virtual machines at present on this server. FreeNAS for nas, BackupPC for backup jobs and Monowall for firewall. What do you guys think.

All I could tell you is good luck with it....
I know that non profit company stressed for budget, but I would never ever build production machines on a white box.
Which hypervisor you are using?
You do know what non-raid drive have very high change of raid failure due to lack of TLER support. This bunch of hardware you purchased is not designed to work 24/7 and will likely fail within first year. You didn't listed your PSU - I hope it's one of better built one or you are asking for even more trouble.
And for crying out loud - don't even think of overclocking the cpu !!

p.s: Most AHer home media servers are built better that this

p.s.s: This is probably one of most critical posts I ever wrote on AH forums due to sufficient proficiency in the subject.

As a retired IT guy I agree completely with BSA. Building something like that for work server is a career move - you're going to lose critical data and your career will move out the door.
