Forum members what about this:

BIC DV 62i's for Front and Rear L/R @ $220 shipped, the DV 62 CLR-S at $102 Shipped and the BIC Acoustech h100 sub at $289 shipped?

This is grand total of $611 and leaves him $189 on a receiver. Is there really a better choice in AV123 or Ascends, or the like out the money spent.

The BIC's don't sound like dogs by any stretch, I have the DV-62CLR-s doing center channel in my all PSB setup and it kicks *** at regardless of its low $102 shipped...

The rocket sub is going to get trounced by the H100 sub... I don't know about the x-ls though.

They currently have some real good pricing on Athena ASC1.2's which is
an LCR (can be used as a center or left/right front) for $99.00ea. They also have the APS4100 Subwoofer, which for $200.00 is a pretty good deal,
Finally, the ASb1.2's 2 for $99.00pr total is 600.00, of course doesn't include tax and shipping. I saw earlier in the thread the accessories4less link. They probably have a good Onkyo receiver models 304 or 504 that you can probably get with what you have left over and maybe some coercing some more cash from one of your benefactors (mom or dad maybe ? The Athena's are by no means the best speakers in the world, but for those prices, I don't think you'll be able to get a better bang for you buck. IF you can't get more
money, then you can go with the ASB1.2's as a front stereo pair and an ASC1.2 as the center and knock the total down to the low 400 dollar range and forgo the surounds until you get some more cash.

Sorry, but I hit reply to soon. IF you do forgo the surrounds to start off with, you will be able to get a far better receiver. Also, you have to remember
speaker cabling. A good 16 guage spool of 100ft will cost you about 30-50 dollars. 14 guage, will be about 20-30 dollars more. Don't forget to budget that into your system. You can always add the surrounds later in the game.

Do you think the Athena ASC1.2 L/R/C with 5.5" woofers and clocking in at 13lbs is better/worse/around the same as the BIC DV 62CLR-S with 6.5" and 26lbs?

The ASb1.2's are also a 5.5" woofer design vs the 6.5" for the DV62Si, the Athena is 10lbs per and the BIC is 15.5 lb per.

The 2ATASP6000 at ~$240 looks nice, and it's down firing.

Given what I have seen of the size of the apartment, I don't know how do-able a 5.1 setup is going to be...

The BIC setup should run around $615 shipped. $102 shipped for the DV 62 CLR-S, $220 2 pairs (front/rear) DV 62Si's (all Amazon) and $279 shipped for the H100 from Overstock. So $601 shipped for the entire speaker setup.

A 2.1 setup could be the Polk R50's from Frys for ~$180 shipped, plus something like either the Athena or H100 sub, so say $460. Still stick with the Onkyo for ~$200 shipped gets him to $660 and leaves $90 to buy used DVD's/CD's from a shop local in town. That would be a killer 2.1 setup for the money.

I've had to opportunity to listen to a set of BIC's (don't know the model #)recently. My oldest son's roomate has a BIC front trio with a large center (black wood grain) that looks like it did in fact have 6 inch(ish) sized drivers. He had it hooked up to a Yamaha 657. They put on Queen of the Damned which has some pretty good center channel dialogue. It sounded pretty good, I must admit, however, right after I left, I went home and put the same DVD on my younger son's system, (he's a big gamer) which is comprised of the Athena ASC1's (not the 1.2's) in an LCR setup, and in all honesty, I feltl it sounded clearer, and more articulate. My youngest son has an Onkyo 603x I picked up Circuit City open box. Any ways, when I was at my older son's condo, I also had them play some music in stereo to see how well the Front/L/R sounded like. They had the same finish and the same speaker components, less one woofer. They also sounded pretty good, but again, I did the same with my son's system, and again I thought the Athena's just sound more open and detailed. The music used was Dio's greatest hits (my music) and Disturbed. I will admit that the BIC's can belt it out pretty loud, but so can the Athena's, and I felt that the Athena's weren't losing anything in the high's where I thought, at high volume, they BIC's started to get a little grungy. Alas, this is just subjective on my part. I would have liked to have gotten both of these in one room in a face off type situation. Don't get me wrong, the BIC's from what I heard that day, and what I've see pricewise on the web, are also a hell of a deal.

How are the Athena's and BIC's vs. the AV123 X-series in sound quality. I know sound is suggestive. I've only auditioned the Athena AS-F1's and didn't thing the sound quality was as good as the x-series mtm's.

Where are you purchasing speaker cable?

www.bluejeanscable.com

100' of 12 AWG = $40
I fall guilty of looking for the best possible price on the equipment, then,
I forget.........about the freaking cables all the time. What I quoted price wise is what you would likely pay at a retailer like BB or CC. What I've always done, is when I am at any of those places, I look for "damaged" or "rapackaged" cables. I have gotten some real sweet deals buying cable that way. Sure, you may get a 9ft componet cable instead of 6ft, but usually, you get them at half the price. UNFORTUNATELY, I have been in a pickle once or twice and had to buy retail. I will say, when I am ready to upgrade to the next step, which is an overhead projector, in the new room we will be adding on, I will definately be getting the cables from someone like Bluejeans.

I can't comment much on this one other than the AVS people do offer the 30 day-in home trial. From what I've read here, the AVS X series is pretty good stuff. and the pricing and specs are also pretty darn good. As for the AS-F1's, the problem with those puppies, is in my opinion, they don't "elevate" the sound. What I mean is they seem to really lose detail if you aren't listening at ear level, and while they may be "towers" they are pretty short speakers. period. I had a pair of the AS-F1's I got at best buy almost 2yrs ago when they originally dumped Athena, (at the store, they still kept them for on-line sale) and ended up giving them to my daughter. I also bought all the AS-C1's LCR's they had (5 total) that day. I thought they sounded better than the AS-F1's did.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I've decided to go with the Onkyo TX-SR304B receiver, a pair of x-ls loudspeakers, and an x-sub subwoofer. In total, I look to spend about $580 (Without cables) so I'll be able to save some cash. Thanks to everyone for pitching in their advice! :)

I am leaning towards that direction myself nowadays, except I am probably going to use an Onkyo 605 instead of the 304. I'll upgrade to 5.1 by buying the x-cs and another pair of x-ls speakers later on down the line. I am still in the research/shopping around phase.

Get your cables from monoprice.com. They are very inexpensive yet very good. You could probably re-sell anything you buy from them on ebay for double what you paid for them, and people would still think its a bargain. $40 will probably buy you every cable and wire you'll ever need for your audio setup including HDMI, optical, and coaxial cables.
