First thanks for any answers to my thread. I plan on getting a new receiver with the dts:x and a new led 4k tv by the end of the year. I have aperion audio speakers, looking at their website it looks like the intimus 5t hybrid system. I also have an older glossy finish set of their book shelf speakers, the same size as the rears of the intimus. i dont use the sub that came with the set, i use a hsu stf1. So really i have 2 questions. Should i use the extra 2 speakers in the front up high or on the sides. Second question is should i use the aperion sub along with the hsu. I have heard it is hard to calibrate having 2 subs. right now i have a yamaha htr6130 which is only 5.1 I know it will depend on the receiver that i get as well but which sounds better, up high or sides? will a new receiver let me have the option of doing either set up? thanks again.

Which additional speaker positions are appropriate are very much a personal choice. It would be appropriate for you to try both to see which you prefer. Before the advent of Atmos, people tended to prefer the Front Wide position when upmixing.

Be sure to verify what speaker channels are supported by the receivers that interest you. Most, but not all, 7.1 channel receivers do allow you to add either Front Height or Rear Surround. (The Surround speaker channels used in a 5.1 system usually are considered Side Surround when comparing it to a 7.1 speaker system.) The Rear Surround position is what is provided by the 7.1 channel sound tracks that are on Blu-ray discs. Front Height (and Front Wide) speaker positions are used only by upmixers like Dolby Prologic IIz, DTS Neo:X and Audyssey DSX unless you invest in an Atmos-capable receiver.

Thanks for the reply. I called Aperion and asked them as well, he said the same thing. Try both and listen. He also pointed me to a nice article for dual subs for beginners. I can't link to it, probably not enough posts for me to do it. It's on their website under home theater blogs in case anyone else is interested.
