Dear all

In the not so distant future I will be stepping up from 5.1 to 7.1. I understand that the closest thing to 7.1 is dts 6.1 discrete but I am curious; if my amp knows I have 7.1 hooked-up, even though the source material is in 5.1 or 6.1, which way will the amp pan a sound from surround left to surround right:

1. pan from surround left to surround-back left to surround-back right to surround right or

2. pan from surround left to both surround-backs to surround right

In other words, will the amp pan across the surround-backs independantly or simply feed both with the same albeit panning signal?

Regards

I believe normal would be option 2, AFAIK, becauase it sees the two rear channels as one. DPLIIx should pan from L-SBL-SBR-R.

Only Dolby ProLocic IIx creates a stereo surround back field, so yes, it will pan to the left and right rear surrounds if you have that decoder engaged.

Thanks GlocksRock. :) What I am really interested in is with regard to playing DVDs. In this context what would happen? Wouldn't either Dolby Digital or dts (depending on what I selected on the disc) automatically come into force and overrule my (possible) choice of Dolby Prologic IIx?

It probably depends on your receiver, on mine I can choose PLIIx on top of Dolby Digital, or on top of DTS, so you can have both at the same time, it wouldn't be overruled. So you can really create 7.1 from a 5.1 source or any other source really, so in effect all your movies will be a matrixed 7.1. Or you could use the DTS Neo:6 decoder and create 6.1 from any source
