663 sub output problem

I just finished hooking up my 663 and I am running into problems with the sub. During the automatic setup I can hear the sub test tones but that is the only time. If I listen to the manual speaker level test tones there is no output from my sub. There is also nothing coming from the sub when I playback video through the PS3.

My speakers are all set to small and the LFE output is set to sub. I'm running out of ideas. Has anybody else run into this problem and can point me to a solution.

Is your sub set to turn on automatically with an input signal? If so, is it turning on? If it's not turning on, trying turning it on manually and then checking if you are getting any output from the sub.

Also, just curious, what is the "LFE Level" set to (page 91 of the owner's manual)? Almost surely not the issue, though.

Well the sub is in fact getting a signal but the volume is just really quiet. The auto setup set the sub level to +4.

Ahhh. Do you have the option of turning up the volume on the sub?

Also, if you have an SPL meter, you could level match the sub to the other speakers manually.

I would do as Adam suggested and you should be fine, barring the sub is not working properly...

what are your main speakers set to, large or small? what is the lfe set to?

Well I really had to boost the sub level to about +6 and crank the gain on the sub itself. The LFE level is set to 0 which I believe is the highest. (-20db to 0db)

When the sub level is at 0 and the gain on the sub is about halfway I can't hear anything coming from the sub when I play a test tone, seems strange...

Are you using the multichannel analog inputs?
That is a good question. The unit has 1 multi/channel subwoofer input, and 2 subwoofer pre-outs labeled 1 and 2. Pre-out #1 right above the word YAMAHA should be used.

Make sure the switch on your sub is set to on instead of auto, set the gain to roughly 50%, and run the YPAO again.

What sound profile/decoder is the Yamaha using when you're playing media (ie. Pro Logic, THX, 2-ch stereo, etc.)?

EDIT - also, any low pass filters on your sub should be disabled, let the 663 set your crossover point. This sounds more like a sub problem than a receiver problem.

I'm using an Elemental Designs A2-300. I guess I figured it out just by boosting up levels. When I run the YPAO it sets the sub level to +4 but that seems too low. Right now I don't have a SPL meter to check levels but obviously I need to pick one up.

I have been using a PS3 with straight PCM on the 663. I did hook up a different sub and the test tone was essentially inaudible at the baseline level.

Hmmmm, not to sound like an ***, but arguably you shouldn't "hear" the sub if it's properly set to the same level as the rest of your system. It should seamlessly fit into the audio spectrum.

You could try the LFE output test part of the Yamaha menu to try your sub at various frequencies and volume levels.

I run my gain at around half way on my sub amp, and the YPAO sets the level at -2 or -3 or so...

I'm talking about hearing the sub test tone when setting speaker levels. Now granted right now I don't have a SPL meter to quantify "hear". When I setup my
Pioneer 1018 the sub gain was halfway and it set the level around -2 (EMP E10). Using the 663 my sub gain is just over half with a +4 level. But anyway, the sub is working, it just seems like the LFE signal from the 663 is low. However, I will be getting a SPL meter this week to confirm whether or not I am crazy.
